Topic: Flight nurse?
Does anyone here work as a flight nurse? As I've said before, I am starting nursing school in the fall. I'll be 36 when I graduate...and I think someplace like Medivac or Lifeflight want 3+ years of icu/ccu experience. That puts me around 40 when I'd be eligible to start. Does anyone have experience in this area? I saw the medivac take off the other night at work, and fell instantly in love

Topic: Wishing you had some refresher classes?
Anyone else finding that they wish they had some refresher classes? Is there anyone who knows where I could do some pharm review especially? I feel like my weakest area is pharmacology and receptors.... and would love some kind of review class.

Topic: RE: Roll Call
I've been a nurse for 3 years, and I started in SNF (LTAC) nursing for 6 mo, then I did tele, cardiac surgery, transplant, and now I'm a travel nurse. As a contract/traveler now I kinda do whatever the best pay is Locally of course, I wouldn't wanna leave home.

Topic: Been sick/Vent
Hey everyone, I've been sicker than a dog for the last week. Had to work 6p-7a on 3-23, was feeling bad that night but just thought it was because I hate working nights. (I am NOT a night person) Slept all day Thurs & Fri. Now I'm really looking forward to this crappy schedule I have for the next week (this past week). Sat & Sun 6a-7p, Mon 6p-7a, off Tues (to sleep) Wed 6a-7p and Thurs 6p-7a again. Started with the green stuff from the chest and nose, got a Rx for a Z-pack from one of the docs at work on Sat. Come into to work on Sunday and by 0830 I'm about to fall over. I can't think, we were so short our clinical manager was working. I couldn't help it, I had to go home, but first I went back to my room to nap and prayed I would be able to drive home at some point. (we have old dorms rooms we can use if we work 12's and live an hour away or more) Finally drove home about 11. Kept getting worse, now my tonsils are growing white stuff and just about touching each other. Being a nurse and of course the last person to actually go and see a doctor (plus I live in a podunk town and I have been to 4 different quacks here) I go to the convenient care clinic at the local hospital on Wednesday, oh yeah because by now my left ear feels like someone is stabbing it with a nail. Actually have a nice doc at the CCC, say I have sinusitis, strep, and a raging ear infection but that the z-pack is working on the bronchitis. He gave me an Rx for Medrol dose pack and Augmentin and a note not to go back to wor****il my next scheduled day next week which is Tues. Here it is Friday and I'm still hocking up crap all the time. Although the Medrol dose pack did give me a lot more energy (Iguess that's what it was) Let's see, so now I have used up all of my 36 hours of PTO I have finally built up, and the last day off will be without pay, what fun. I'm gonna have to work tons of OT for the next couple of months, our short term disability pays 60% of our base pay but I work W/E option. Hubby is a full time student. Money is going to be crap until after surgery and I get back to work. Anyway I guess this vent is over, new ya'll would understand...just can't wait to get back and hear the lecture on how many "incidents" I have.

I am thinking about doing some travel nursing in Ahoskie. I would love to hear from anyone that knows about the hospital there and the town itself. Thanks in advance.

Topic: RE: Hospice nursing
In January of 1993 I went to work with our local Hospice. The first day I told my boss this: "Give me 2 weeks and if I don't like it...no harm done." She agreed and that is where I have been since. I came from the newborn nursery. So, as you can see, I have worked both ends of the spectrum. I love Hospice work. I guess it is one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. Some say, "I don't know how you do that.", but I say I don't know how I couldn't. Any of my patients and their families will tell you that I make them feel like they are the only patient I have even when I am running like mad to get my work done. It is a privilege to be allowed to assist someone in the very last thing we do on this earth...die. Everyone deserves to die with dignity. The dying teach us so much about life. I hope this works out for you. It has been a blessing for me. Let me know what you decide.
