Hey Dawn, there are LOTS of nurses that are obese. That will not stop you from getting a job. As with everything you may not start out with the job you want, but you have to start somewhere.
If you don't get into some kind of acute setting you will lose the skills you went to nursing school for, IMHO.
Where in IN are you? I worked at Deaconess in Evansville for 2 1/2 years years after I finished nursing school. They also pay for the RNY with little to no hassle.
Good luck and let me know how things go.

Topic: I have a question
Ok I know this may sound stupid but do hospitals really hire nurses that are obesite? I am a new RN and got my current job as an industral nurse when a friend told someone I was graduating from nursing school. I talked to my boss on the phone and she hired me from the phone call site unseen. Now I want to work part time at a hospital on my days off. Thank you for any information you could give me.

I am really thinking about going back and working in Barrow, Alaska. There is a 20 bed hospital there, and I would love to job share with someone. What that means is that we would alternate working 4 months at a time, share an apartment (part of hospital housing). I worked sometimes 50 - 70 hours a week - if you could call it work! My skills were pretty rusty from sitting at a desk. The Inupiat are quite interesting to watch and learn from. As far as the staff, it's like working with family members.
We had a man that came in in severe hypothermia. Our little cleaning lady stopped what she was doing and litterally ran down the hall to put clean blankets in the dryer and get them warm, as we used eveything in the warmer. I was there three weeks when I finally found out you call central supply (right around the corner from the nurses station) and not maintanance when you needed as oxygen tank replaced. I would call the wrong department and they would bring it, anyhow!
Did I mention Barrow is north of the artic circle? It's very cold in the winter, and I did get to walk on the Arctic Ocean. And the winter is dark. That didn't bother me becasue I usually went to work in the dark, and came home in the dark. The money is good, too.
Feel free to send an email to me or respond here!
Thanks,
Sue
Topic: RE: following diet
I looked at your profile, and you are a "lightweight", with an even lower BMI than I had when I had surgery! It's really hard to experience lagging weight loss, when you hear of people on the boards that are losing 40, 50 or more pounds per month. It's like your body is betraying you. Here you are, doing everything just right, and other people don't follow the rules and the weight just drops off. Not fair!
One question - did you weigh yourself when you got home from the hospital? I had lap RNY, and I brought home an extra 15 lbs of fluid after my two day stay! Personally, I considered my first day home weight to be my all time highest weight, even if it was fluid!
If you are following the diet plan, you know in your rational mind there is no way you can't NOT lose weight after WLS. I can only say I know how you feel, but I don't have any advice other than to be patient - which is sucky advice when you want the pounds to be gone!!!!!
Hang in there!
Sue
