Topic: RE: Has anyone here had plastic surgery or a panniculectomy?
Was there ANY conditions under which BCBS for Feds pays for plastics? I am currently carrying 2 insurances (my husband is a Fed) and will drop BCBS if they will not cover plastics.

This board is hard to find, the only way I can find it is thru the link in my profile, LOL But here is another nurse getting ready to take the plunge. Lets get this board moving.

I don't know. You'd think that nurses would be just dying to post. Let me know if you find out. Nancy

LOL, Guess we need to think of our post-op instructions like nursing school. Do what they tell us NOT the way we do things in the real world.

Topic: RE: Anyone work in nutrition?
Hi Kate! My dietician and I do a combined Nutrition and Preparation for Surgery class for our patients, so I've picked up her "stuff". We follow most of what you listed: protein first and half of every meal 64 ounces of water per day minimum no snacking/grazing eat 2 meals/day, a 3rd if wanted stop drinking 30 minutes before eating, wait 1 hr after eating to resume drinking no straws We do not ask our patients to count calories, just bites (for example, intially they may only be able to eat 4-6 bites, then at the six month stage-we go to 1/2 cup chicken, 1/4 cup carrots, etc.) Our progression of diet: discharge till first follow up appointment: clear liquids (water, broth, sugar free popscicles, jell-o, diluted (50/50 with water): crystal light, diet minute maid; 1st f/u till 6 wks. soft/pureed. 6 wks. regular: high protein, low fat, low sugar. We ask them to focus on high quality, nutrient dense protein choices (not mini corndogs!) and avoid high fat/high sugar.

Kate, My physician, nutritionist, FNP do not advance his patient's diets as rapidly as the others seem to. My surgery was 12/21. I'm still on a full liquid diet until 1/21 (one month post op). I'm to get in 24 oz of water in a 24 hr period right now. I'm to try to drink full liquid fluids (4oz) q 2 hrs and in between q 2 hrs I'm to "sip" my water slowly. My protein intake is 20 - 30 gms/ day, and they are perfectly okay with that (for now). My caloric intake is 400 - 600cals / day, and, they are perfectly okay with that, as well. I'm not to have sugar, honey, etc. and of course carbs are greatly limited. Your doc may advise something totally different, but, mine has been doing the RNY for many years and has his rules down to a science. Its all very clearly laid out for us. His complication rate is lower than most. I wish I could help more. Good luck to you, girl! Karen
