Hi Shellianne,
Yep there are more of us....I live in Sun City, CA. (about 10 miles from Temecula) my employment branch office is in Orange, I rarely go there as I am also in managed care and spend a majority of my time in my home office on the phone or on the computer doing reports, looking up quidelines such as ACOEM and ODG, anyway...howdy neighbor

Topic: EDEMA OF UNKNOWN ETIOLOGY
I'm nearly 3 years post op DS, down to 189 lbs from 304. I'd like to loose more, but can't complain, anything is better than 304! My only complaint is that I have moderately severe edema of my trunk to my ankles! This started January 2003. I've been on Lasix 40 mg QD po since June 2004, and increased that to BID just 2 days ago. My PCP is very supportive, but can't figure out why I have this. My labs --especially serum albumin--are fine. I take supplements religiously. My surgeon thinks that it's my former fat cells holding fluid. Sorry guys, I just can't buy that one! Anybody have any experience with similar problems? I'm 52, so PMS and TOM are out of the picture.
TIA.
Susan in NYC

Good for you!
I had the surgery 4-9-99 and have not regreted it for one minute. I wish I could have it again to shrink my pouch back down though....oh well can't have everything.
Good Luck

Hi Carolyn here. I have only been anurse for two years. Graduated 2002 at 39years old. Stayed home with the kids for years. Now I have a great job at Brigham and women's in Boston, MA in med/surg, learning new things each day.
I am very interested in neuro, probably because my 12 year old was born 2 months premature and has learning deficits. She is doing great in school, works very hard in 7th grade now.
One dream job would be to go with Oprah to a third world country and help the poor. What a blessing it would be to watch the get better.
Also a sexy momma would be a plus. Carolyn

Thanks Jenn---I like it here. Yeah, we are only about 20-30 minute drive from each other. Small world! Any other So Cal RNs on the board?

My surgery was 4/27/04. I am down 89 pounds from the day of surgery. My energy level is so much better, my knees don't hurt, and I stood all day yesterday and I noticed my feet did not hurt so much! What a difference taking all that "luggage" off has felt. Plus, I rode the rides at a carnival last week for the first time in 10 years! I actually fit in the rides, and they closed easily. I had tears and was crying as I rode the first ride. People probably thought I was afraid and crying on the ride...ha, ha. Little do they know. I have 61 pounds to go to meet my goal weight. I feel like this has been a miracle. It is amazing!

Wow, I am shocked too! I thought that you had to be an RN to do the initial assessment! It is weird how different the states are. I live in Ohio now, but graduated from school in Indianapolis, IN. Only 4 year nurses could do home health there, and you also had to have a 4 year degree to be a school nurse. I moved to Ohio, and you can be an AD nurse and do both. I don't have a problem with any of the above, except that initial assessment, for reasons you probably would agree with~advanced knowledge, ect. I don't think you are being snooty at all...health care is something else now. Best wishes and congrats on your surgery!

Hey Shellianne,
Welcome to the RN board and thanks for responding to the post!
You are quite close (geographically) to me

Topic: Just wondering...
Hi all RNs! I am an RN myself scheduled for RNY tomorrow! I just wanted to pass on something that has been bothering me a little bit. When I had my preop done, It was an LPN that started my IV and infusion of fluids. I know (in KS at least) that this can be done by an LPN if she has been IV certified. It was the same LPN who did my admission assessment (I thought the initial had to be done by an RN). It was a CNA who drew my blood (she obviously knew what she was doing, she was good!), and it was the same CNA who dc'd my IV (this one suprised me!) Don't think I am prejudiced for wondering why I didn't see an RN until I got into the OR for my EGD, I myself was a CNA fror 2 years, and an LPN for 10. I was just really shocked I never once saw an RN in preop! Am I just being overly snooty??? Just needed to vent!
Thanks,
Tonya
