Hey Mitzi,
I'm totally with you on loving any area. I first went into RN school at 18 and dropped out because of "not wanting to work with old people" I wanted peds or OB/GYN. I took several years off to mature, marry, raise young children, divorce ,work my butt off as a single parent of 3 wonderful children, mature some more...AND THEN went back to nursing school with a whole new perspective (while still working/raising 3 kids under 7.)
As a graduate, I went straight into NICU. Loved it,was good at it, but wanted something else- one too many 24 weekers. Went to Peds Hem/Onc loved that too! Then was a sedation nurse administering moderate sedation for children and adults undergoing MRI. Eventually I made my way to working primarily with those wonderful over 65'ers. Boy have I learned alot! There is so much wisdom to gain from our elder's!

Hey Mary,
Your not alone. I too would love to be a domestic engineer as well. I guess that's a huge reason why I went into home health nursing. The flexibility allows me to juggle work and kids/homelife. Good luck with your goal!

And big thanks to all my fellow nurses for replying. It is so interesting to read and reminds me why I became a nurse!

I was also an open RNY on 4/20/04. I am trailing behind at -65 pounds, but I'm alright with that. I work in a busy ER in a trauma center. I just got off of light duty post op at the end of July and I managed to fall right on my back running a guy arresting in the hall back to the ER. So...back on light duty and unable to exercise
! Hopefully I will heal up soon. It is without a doubt the best decision I made, though. When my mom had it in 3/03, I was morally opposed to the surgery because of the high complication rates that I was seeing in the ER. However, I realised that I was seeing people so sick because the well don't come to the ER! So, I started reading this website and talking to people, and I decided it was right for me. I signed on for benefits where I work and waited the waiting period, and here I am! You'll never regret it!

I have been a nurse for 9 years...basically in geriatric, psych, med/surg, and long term acute care. I always wanted to do ob/gyn and thought I would hate geriatrics, but I ended up LOVING it. I actually think I would like just about any area.

I can't wait until I can say that! I am hoping that this surgery will be the tool I need to help me get back to nursing and doing what I love. I have had 4 back surgeries, and all this extra weight is making everyday living hard, I have pain all the time...this is kinda my last resort before spinal fusion...YUCK!! I am so happy for you! 86 lbs is awesome!!!

Well...I was off about 1 1/2 weeks, BUT, when I returned I didn't work the floor...I just did paperwork...chart reviews and such. I'm a primary nurse in a rehab hospital, so there's loads of weekly notes and other documentation to be done, + all the red tape that goes along with a discharge and admission.
I have to be honest, though...I think I went back way too soon, so I would recommend take 4 weeks off! I couldn't lift anything >10 lbs for 3 weeks...doctor's orders.
It has been an amazing journey! I feel so much better, and my energy level has skyrocketed!

I had my RNY on 5/18/04, down 74 lbs and loving it. I have more energy than I have had in years. I even hike the stairs at work now. It is so nice to work 8 to 12 hour shifts without huffing and puffing.

Hi
I had my Prox. Lap RNY on 4/22/04. Isn't it the greatest?!?! I know I have much more endurance, and less SOB, and absolutely no regrets.

I had surgery (RNY) approx. 4 months ago, and I have lost 86 lbs! I am truly amazed. I have so much more energy, and everyone knows, being a nurse I can use it! This is a wonderful tool. It took me 1 1/2 years to take the leap, but am I glad I did!
Good luck everyone!!
