Topic: Hey, I agree we all need ...
work hard on changing the veiw of our co-workers. I have heard it many times snide comments behind my back, "she's that way cause she has no willpower", I eat less now then anyone in my house and don't lose weight. Its genetic. When I posted on our employee forum at work I got horrible, inconsiderate, condesending comments. Everything from lazy, no will power, pigs, ect. It is sad.
Topic: Hello all nurses!
I just found this board, was glad to see it. I am a RN (for 26 years) and had Lap RNY done 10/7/03. I have lost 85 pounds to date and would still like to lose another 30. The weight loss is starting to slow down now, but I feel SO much better, both physically and mentally. I think this was the best decision I have ever made. Nurses should really serve as advocates for this procedure. I think that prejudice and discrimination against obese, particularly morbidly obese people is one of the last remaining areas. It still is "acceptable" to make fat jokes and degrade obese folks. I felt it first hand as a patient when I had my surgery and it really hurt. I now try to make sure that I help co-workers to understand how to be "sensitive" to these patients. Keep in touch.

Hi Mary,
I just found this board too. Sounds like you are getting close!!
Good luck with your preparations for surgery. I am so much at the beginning of this that I can't even see the light at the end of the tunnel yet!
Congrats!! Laurie

Topic: Hi everyone! Nurse WannaBe here!
Hi all, I am getting ready to start my FOURTH SEMESTER!!!!! WoooHoooo! I am also considering surgery, but have not decided on lap-band or RNY. I am also on Jenny Craig because I promised my family I would try another diet (about the millionth one). Can anyone tell me of a reliable source of information regarding risks of the two surgeries? Everything I read about lap-band seems too good to be true. I am hesitant to rearrange my anatomy with the RNY, but have heard of some great successes.
Anyway, I am DONE. I diet every single day of my life just to keep from gaining more. I am to the point where I am almost willing to sneak over to T.J. and have surgery and don't tell anyone, but I'm not sure how safe Mexico is for surgery. I would appreciate any wisdom on any of the above. Thanks, Laurie

Hey every one, I just found the RN board and I think this is just great
. I am in the process of getting my date with a surgeon.
It really has been a long process and lots of hoops to jump through.
My insurance approved right off. I have had to do 2 months of preop classes, psych eval, preop physical and interview, diet consult. Boy I have been hopping since Dec 03. I just have a support group to attend and pay for my 12 weeks of postop class and I am ready for them to make my appointment with the surgeon which they said could take up to 2 months. Boy what a busy surgery to have lol. I am having surgery in the same hospital that I work in. I am a critical care nurse, so I am going to have to put all my trust in the floor nurses. Theyr'e good at Via Christi or atleast I can't complain. I know I am really nervous.
