Hi Aggie, I am trying to post here more often in the hopes of getting others to do the same. We need the support of our fellow nurses.... Mary

Hi I'm Aggie and I had WLS on 2/9/04 and I've lost 24 pounds! My BMI was 39 but I have had diabetes and hypertension for 3 years now and I am only 46. Working on a General Medical unit I have seen the ravages of diabetes first hand and I did not want that for myself. So the night before surgery was the last time I took my diabetes meds and by blood sugars have been normal since then. Amazing! I feel energetic and I have been back to work for 2 weeks. My colleagues have been supportive and at times concerned that I might have some of the complications that we sometimes see on our unit. My post op course was definitely easier knowing what I had to do. I made my self walk to the door of my room that first night. The nurses were exceptional and very supportive. I hope you all have as an good experience as I had. Lovin' the losing live, Aggie

Thought I'd post another message. I sent my grievance letter via certified mail last Tuesday to my insurance company(HAP). I'm sorta surprised I haven't received the card back saying they've received it. Seems like it should have been there by now. I stopped in and saw my insurance coordinator at my PCP's office on Friday, who said she'd check with HAP today from her other office and call me. Of course, I got no phone call. SURPRISE!

Love your post! It applies to most of us I am sure! I want this surgery so bad, and it seems like all my insurance company is doing is stalling. I think I will be a better nurse after the surgery. I want to have my energy back! Take care! Pam

Hello I am also a RN in Alabama. How did your surgery go? My date is May 11th. I pray you are doing well. Kristi

I have found that it is easier to navagate through appointments being an RN. I know how scheduling works and the buzz words that get me what I need. Kristin, what is wrong with thoses nurses that they won't cover for you the night before surgery? You must work with some real winners. I can't imagine working in that situation. I'd be pissed! I have found that I am getting support from my co-workers. I supervise a nutritionist and she has watched my struggles and has helped me with it. I went to an endocrinologist who was the one who first verbalized wls. My pcp and my rheumatologist are behind me. When I tell my co-workers I usually begin by telling them of my struggles. Then I tell them about my MD visits and the recommendations. I have not found any that are unsupportive. I know that I should not have to tell these details, but it is much easier for me to gain their support and not feel looked down on. I am also not a terribly private person. I am kind of "what you see is what you get". My co-workers know that I will support them in their struggles and I have found them to be quite open with me. I expect the same from them. Maybe you should share some of your struggles with one of them that might be easiest to reach. It would be good to have someone on your team when you end up spending so much time with these people. Good luck in your struggles and especially with your surgery. Let us know how you are. Willi

I agree that it is great to find other nurses here. I have found that being a nurse has made all of my pre-op appointments smoother. I also had an easier time scheduling the surgery as I work for the same hospital where my surgery will be...less than 3 weeks now! I am currently having a heck of a time getting coverage for the days I will be out. As it is, I already have to work the night before surgery...meaning I get out of the ER at 0700 and report immediately to day surgery...and I have to be NPO after mn. Oh well...hope y'all have a great weekend! Kristen

Hi Mary. For a moment I thought I was reading my profile when I read about you. I too have been considering this sx for years and only recently made my decision that I must go through with it. I had a consult scheduled twice, and chickened out ("for my kids sake"). Well after gaining another 30# and now I weigh 320, I am done. I have never been so heavy and unhealthy in my life. I altered my eating and cut out all fried foods and soda for a month now (a HUGE accomplishment ), and have lost nothing. I guess I just disspelled two beliefs that: 1. We MO people don't try (common belief of the occult named the "satanic skinny people"), and 2. If "we" would change our eating habits we would lose weight easily . I have a consult on May 5, and God willing I will be there. I have told my mother and have her support (a huge undertaking!) as well as my husband's and childrens' (kids are ages 7 and 11). It is very complicated at my house, as my first hubby died when my kids were small (1 and 5), and so I struggle with potentially putting them through it again if complications were to arise. Add to it the fact that I have fewer health issues than some (DJD x2 in my lumbar spine with chronic pain daily tx with Vioxx), plantar faciaitis, high cholesterol ****reated), and irregular menses, and you have a guilt trip. Obviousely there are social issues for me as well. I have become a hermit by hobby. Well, enough about me, I just wanted to say there are others out there who have struggled with this decision, and I support you. I will send some prayers and positive carma your way in hopes that your approval happens soon. It will happen for you. Hang in there. PS My photo should be posting soon; the volunteer contacted me today.
