Topic: As The Stomach Turns...
Well, I sent my grievance letter in yesterday. I did NOT get my chart from my current PCP, but I did have some labs, some receipts stating the reasons I saw my former PCP (i.e. hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity), an x-ray report for a view of my spine stating there were no clinical reasons for my pain which means the weight is the cause, and some "fat" pics that I sent with it. So keep your fingers crossed for me. The stuff I did send with my letter was actually the more recent stuff anyway...I haven't seen my current PCP for the past year except to ask her to request my referral. I hope I don't turn blue holding my breath. Mary

I don't really have anything to say right now. Been a quiet Sunday after a fun Saturday. Getting ready to go to bed, we all know day shift comes early in the morning. UGH I am not a morning person...lol I will have more to say as the week progresses. I plan to be quite active getting my grievance letter in the mail and following up with my PCP to make sure she's doing what's she's supposed to do. Stay tuned....

Topic: RE: It's nice to find other nurses here
Hello All! I too am a RN, and I try to make it stand for "real nice," when I work. I guess some of them are "real nasty" out there. Sure have worked with a few. I really do love nursing, only been doing it 2 years. I'm 29 with 2 kids, and the only thing holding me back in life is my fatsuit. I have been thinking about sx (it's great to be in a nursing forum, so I can use all the shorthand!) for > a year, and cancelled a consult last year. I have since gained 30 lbs, and have set my mind to sx. Consult is in May (my future surgeon is VERY busy - RoseMarie Jones in Carmel, IN); I'm hoping to go under the knife by summer's end. Anyone feel like it has been beneficial to be a nurse while speaking to your MD? Any tips on using this to your advantage or disadvantage? That would be great & helpful knowledge to have. Hope I am welcome to the group; most nurses I work with are skinny, and think WLS is bad, and that MO is a mental issue (you know we are all food addicts ). Happy early St. Pat's Day! Lori H. Mary, don't give up. Keep hounding them and make a pest of yourself. They will complete anything you want just to get you off their back. This is your life we are talking about, not an elective cosmetic surgery for gosh sakes!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, haven't been to the site in a while and stumbled on the the RN site tonight. Horray for us. I say to all you fellow nurses who are fighting insurance companies and waiting for your surgery dates, keep praying and don't give up hope. My BMI was 54 and my insurance approved my surgery the first time around, however it took 5 weeks from the time I got everything ready for my surgeon. His office is the one that submitted all the info to Ins. company, not my PCP. I had my surgery Jan 16 of this year, I consider that my "re-birthday". I am 8 weeks post op and have lost 39 pounds as of last week. I only weigh once a week, otherwise I would be neurotic with the scale. I have been a RN for 33 years, spent most of that time as Med/surg Manager, but also did Administrative Supervision. I am currently the Clinical Services Supervisor on a 20 bed Acute Rehab unit in our local hospital in Fort Walton Beach, and I love it. Nurses are wonderful, but we also develop health problems and obesity like any other person. So, we're human. But now we have found something to help us and I say, Go for it. Everyone at my work place has been more than supportive. I had no negative comments before or after surgery. And I have had to complications (you know, if something bad is going to happen, it will happen to a nurse. Right?) But we are here to reverse that myth. Best to all of you and whoever started this site, horray for you!!

Hi, I too had trouble getting all the info I needed I finally took my chart to my (former) PCP and said this info is going to insurance for evaluation. I do not want it to go without a letter from you. No weights are recorded in my chart even tho I was on diet pills. I gave him a diet and weight history that sat on his desk for 3 weeks. Finally I made him so uncomfortable he called me into his office and typed it in front of me. I work in the same clinic so in a way I had the extra access but the point is be a pest if you have to. It is your health you are fighting for. Laurie

It is great to find other nurses to communicate with online. I am scheduled for surgery on May 28th at Mass General in Boston. I live about 90 miles west of there but this seems like the best option around for me. I, too, get sick of hearing about the awful nurses. If only people knew what the staffing ratios were and what that means. They just have no idea. I would not go back to floor nursing again for anything. I work Head Start and work with the little ones. Interesting mostly, frustriating sometimes. I am glad to have you guys to ask questions of as I get closer and then post-op. Willi Ryan

Well gang, I haven't been on in a couple days. I've been busy running around town gathering information cuz I got my denial letter. And the worst part about it is, it was denied because my PCP did not submit any clinical data to them regarding my case. No height, weight, labs, nothing! DUH! How can they approve me for surgery if they don't even know my height and weight? Last night I went to the Henry Ford Hospital WLS support group meeting with Kathie K. At the meeting I met a guy I've been chatting with on the Yahoo HFH WLS support group. He gave me the phone number for the main lady (Jeanette) in the referral department at HAP and told me to call precisely at 8 am or I won't get through to her. I called at precisely 8 am and got her voice mail. About 20 minutes later Ann called me back and told me that she called my PCP a while ago and said she told whoever she spoke with exactly what was needed from them regarding my referral but nothing was ever sent. She also said she gave them plenty of time to send it, in fact, more time than usual. Eventually, they had to send the denial letter based on the fact that they have no clinical data about me. So I called my PCP afterwards to tell her what they said. My PCP said, "That sounds like an excuse to me" Regardless, the information was still needed. So she claims that she will work on it tonight. In the meantime, I went to my previous doctor's office today to get copies of my labs and my x-ray report related to my back pain to send with my grievance letter. My lipids are high!!!! Sad how that makes me excited isn't it? Cholesterol: 259 = High (should be less than 200 and borderline is 200-240) Triglycerides: 176 = Borderline high (should be less than 150) LDL (bad cholesterol): 182 = high (should be less than 100 and borderline is 100-129) cholesterol/HDL Ratio: 6.2 = Increased cardiac risk (should be less than 4.0 for reduced cardiac risk and normal cardiac risk is 4.0-6.0) Not to mention these labs are from May of last year and it's almost a year later, so I'm sure they're worse now. This is what's called hyperlipidemia and is a co-morbidity for approving the surgery. Of course when I stopped in to see my PCP yesterday, I left with her my receipts from my previous PCP which state the reasons I visited him. They all say hypertension (high BP), some also say hypercholesterolemia and one says obesity. These receipts are all in my favor for approval as well. (I called her back and she said she'd try to mail them to me tonight even though I told her I'd come into the office and pick them up. She said the office is closed til Monday and she will be in and out this week, so if she drops them in the mail, I'll be sure to get them.....We'll see!) So it should be just a matter of time before I'm approved unless they try to catch me on the "medically supervised" diet for a minimum of one year thing. And I have been to 2 diet docs in the past, just hasn't been for a whole year each, maybe combined they might equal a year. So I hope they don't get that nitty gritty cuz the one was so long ago, I don't know if he's still around and if he is, if he'll have my records still.

So happy to see other nurses catch Rustys post. I work in a pediatrics office. I am proud of the work I do. It is not as important as hospital nursing and I guess I have to admit a tech could do my job. But, I know my nursing education and experience bring something more to my job and i enjoy the respect and trust of my Dr a tech never would get. My Dr is young and asks my opinion on certain things. Welcome. Laurie

Rusty, I agree with you and worry for all of us as patients in an aging large population of baby boomers. The fact is I would never encourage my daughter or sons to be nurses. The field is full of landmines and frustration. If they had a burning desire that would be different but otherwise I recommend a less stressful route. laurie
