Hi, I am a post op lap RNY (4 days) and wondering if it is normal to have bad gas pains and a weight gain of 20 Lbs? has anyone experience this at all. I feel like a over inflated beach ball. Marleen

I had similar problems due to lactose intolerance. I tried to start on the homemade protein drink and could not tolerate the gas from the lactose. I gained 15 and landed back into the hospital from dehydration. I would certainly call your surgeon or dietitician and see if milk and dairy are on your no list. I felt like I was pregnant again. I still drink milk, just made with Dean's Easy brand. it is lactose free and fat free. Tastes great with some no added sugar instant breakfast. Check out the lactose thing...it could be the culprit. Hang in there, it does get easier. Amy P

You probably should wait a few days to weigh in. A lot of people carry weight home from the hospital from the IV fluids. Know that there is NO WAY you could actually gain real weight because you aren't eating anything! If you have bad gas pains, have you called your surgeon and see if it would be OK to eat a gas-x tablet or something? You are in the rough part of the deal. You'll feel like a new person in another week. Try to get whatever rest you can (I couldn't sleep at all once I got home) and get some fluids in. best wishes, Michelle

When they do lap procedures they blow you up with gas in order to do the procedure. Gas pains could be from that - walking will help out tremendously. Also as stated above could be a lactose intolerance - should be easy to tell if you are having the pain after drinking or just all the time. Weight gain - you didnt actucally gain weight - you are retaining water... they pump you full of fluids in the hospital so it will take some time to go down. I didnt gain any weight in the hospital but I didnt lose any weight for 2 weeks post-op because I was still retaining fluids. As I said earlier walk as much as possible and that will help you out!

RNY on 11/15/05 with
Marleen; The weight gain is normal. It's a result of the gas and fluids they pumped into you in the hospital. Walking will help the gas pass and sipping water will help flush the fluids from your system. Blessings, Jennifer 253 / 161 / 137
