For those of you who have already been through the surgery now for some time, are you back on somewhat normal eating? Do you eat bread? Is there anything that you just cannot eat? Mary B

I am one month out as of today... I am on a "soft foods" diet from week 2 post-op thru week 6 post-op and am allowed "dry breads" crackers etc. Basically I can eat bread if its toasted. I had a grilled cheese... I eat my tuna fish on whole wheat wheat thins and havent had a problem. Some surgeons/NUTs will tell you to stay away from breads/pastas etc but mine says its fine as long as it is in moderation. After the 6 weeks I can eat "normal" bread but it tends to get "gummy" so I have to be careful when I do eat it. I havent had any food intolerances so far. We were discussing this in my support group last night and biggest issue most had was meat or dairy. There was a lady 5 years out that cannot eat meat, another lady about 8 months out that cant tolerate red meat and another girl who is 3 months out that is now lactose intolerant. The food intolerance Ive heard the most from people is not being able to eat steak again. I would say at this point I am eating pretty "normally" just am limited on what I can eat but I still do get in a good variety

you may have different reactions to different breads. so far I have had crackers with no repercussions. have had dried cereal and mild repercussions. had soft pretzels and holy cow.. horrible pukey foamies had cookies with limited repercussions. flour tortillas have been okay had corn chips yesterday with peach salsa and that was less than desirable. so I would say tread carefully, keep your portions to 1/4 of your normal serving and allow enough room in your tummy for 'foamies' and 'expansions' and what not. overall, bread has been 'over-rated' in my diet and just not worth it.

Hi Mary. I am 6 months out and I have been able to tolerate crackers of all kinds easily. I can eat a half piece of bread if it is toasted well. Flour tortillas are OK for me as well. I have only eaten a small taste of a roll or something like that. They are my weakness so I try to stay away from them. So far so good. I can tolerate rice krispies cereal without sugar very well. I miss my cereal. LOL I am a cold cereal person I hate hot cereals. But everyone is different. You will just have to try things and see how they affect you. Good luck Robin

Hi Mary, I am 6 1/2 years out and I eat pretty much what I like with a few exceptions. I love bread and can eat it but I do have to limit it because it fills me up very quickly. At this point I can eat a 6inch subway sub as long as it is not full of extras like lettuce and tomatoes etc. That bread is very thick and as long as I CHEW and EAT SLOW I have no problem. As time goes on I am still amazed at how full I still get on small amounts of food, at least small compared to what I was scarfing down before surgery. I still can not go into a restaurant and finish an entree and I consider that a huge plus!! Best~

Mary; I'm 8 months post-op. I can pretty much eat anything I could pre-op (with the exception of sweets), just in smaller quantities. However, just because I can eat something, doesn't mean it's always a good idea. Some people only lose consistently when limiting their carbs. I lose better when my diet is more balanced, so I eat some crackers almost every day. Crackers don't give me the bloated feeling that bread does. Blessings, Jennifer 253 / 159 / 137
