After surgery, can you eat Sashimi?
Hello folks, I'm just in the researching phase of my journey and this is my first posting.
Sushi and Sashimi are my favorite foods.
I realize I'll be trying to get in LOTS of protein, so Sashimi (just the raw fish, not the rice) sounds like a good idea, especially the Salmon and Mackerel, which are high in Omega 3.
Is anyone able to tolerate this? How about with soy sauce? With wasabi? These two kinds of fish are fatty...how is that fat tolerated?
I am still pre-op but my nutritionist recomments that we eat salmon. And told me if I can tolerate it raw then eat it because of the benefits of the protein and the omega-3's in the fish. As for the wasabi I personally will cry if i cant eat it, the only thing is using alot because you cant wash the burn away because you arent supposed to drink while you eat.
Sushi... yum..... Yes. I eat sushi. Sashimi, yes. Rolls, only the insides and ask them to go easy on the rice (most good sushi places will do this and then they bulk up the insides, yum). I usually order a mix of sashimi and one piece of nigiri (I like just a tiny amount of rice, so I pick the fish off of that piece and then eat tiny amounts of the rice with the whole meal - this is only like a tbsp of rice, so no harm). I still use the wasabi mixed with soy sauce. Ask if they have the low sodium soy sauce, some do, some don't. Its worth a try. I will say that I waited until I was about 3 months out to eat sushi again, but mostly it was mental. I had mild nausea with some foods as a fresh post-op and the thought of chewing sushi sounded a little iffy to me. But it was fine when I did finally try it. I do cut all pieces in half now before eating, and I do chew quite a bit. Its not as bad as I thought.

I love sushi and sashimi!! I am happy to say that my first wandering into regular food after surgery was sashimi and it was perfect!! wasabi, miso soup, all good. I order the sashimi appetizer now and i'm finally a cheap sushi date (compared to what I could eat before!!)
I've had unagi too, minus the rise, and the insides of different rolls as well. I haven't tried my favorite, amaebi (sweet shrimp) because of the fried shrimp heads, but someday down the road i may have to try it again!
Mmmmm, I asked this question a few weeks ago in the Main Forum, and I'm glad to see the same positive responses here that I got. I freaking LOVE sushi, so not eating it was going to make me sad. But I'm really happy to hear most everyone say it's A-OK. One comment I got in my topic was to be careful with the seaweed/nori used in sushi, because it's very difficult to chew up. And it seems like it'd be something the stomach would have trouble digesting (b/c if doesn't chew up as easily).
But yay, sushi!!!!!!!!!! I'm such a sushi fiend.

I was told that if I eat the seaweed to make sure I chew it very well but to give it a few months after surgery before I try it. Now the seaweed in the miso soup is cooked and very tender and much easier to chew up if you ask me and miso soup is full of protein from the broth, tofu, seaweed and the miso paste.
I had 3 pieces of spicy tuna w/avacado for lunch today....yummmmmo. I do low sodium soy and a little of wasabi. Sushi and sashimi are some of the only foods I really enjoy eating and go down well every time.
