We have a bagel shop at the university - einstein bros.  I have gotten a bagel with cream cheese to split with my husband.  I can eat the cream cheese and about half of my bagel half (1/4 bagel) - I am 7 months out.  I generally don't eat breads or cereals to where I am full because it seems like they expand a few minutes later and then I am uncomfortable.  I can eat a slice of wheat bread toasted but otherwise I usually stay away from bread for comfort purposes.  Bagels are so chewy and dense, they are not worth it to me.  Also, I don't crave bread like I did as a pre-op.  Bread was a big part of my weight problem pre-op so I always keep in mind that it could be a trigger food.

I had one today and I am 8 months out.  I was only able to eat 3/4 of a 1/2 bagel.  This would be the first one I ever tried.  It was so good, but not going to make it a habit but It went down fine.

Sadly your post presumes that a whole multigrain bagel is an approprate serving.  Unfortunately, commercial bagels are WAY TOO BIG and your looking at something in the 350 to 400 calorie range without cream cheese. I eat bagels about once a month.  I eat half for a meal and save or throw out the other half. Remember, just because they give you a particular amount does not make that amount a NORMAL or appropriate serving.  Consult the nutrition information and decide for yourself.

OMG. No, my post did not presume *anything* except the  fact that I had a question. The question was "can you eat a bagel" not should you, would you, but CAN you...meaning, are you "able to", as in physically able.. I wasnt asking "permission" or something.....I know damn well that a commercial bagel is way over a regular portion size, and I am familiar with the calorie ranges, as well... So, "sadly" ....YOUR post presumed something incorrect, not MINE.... Everybody else,,,,thanks for your input!!!! (and for answering the question that I had ASKED)

Ok, no bashing please, I know its not a great choice, but:
Who, post RNY, can eat a whole multigrain bagel with cr cheese ? At , say, 7 months out? Why are you being so mean, you expected some comments based on your original no bashing.  As it is hard enough to get in all the protein more or less add something to the mix that is not that first, therefore I see everyone posting I do my protein first then carbs, well a bagel in the morning is not protein first so I believe that is why everyone is taking that stance. Ummmmm..why am *I* being "mean"?

I said NO bashing, because I just wanted answers to the question I asked, not anyones opinion on IF one SHOULD partake in a bagel, or the theory about protein first, etc.  Then I get a post saying that I didnt know portion sizes. Please, people get off your high horse.  Example: If someone posted a question : Can you eat coconut post op? I wouldnt reply, because, I hate coconut. I wouldnt retort back with "its unhealthy, so I chose not to eat it as part of my post op life" or, "you must not know the nutritional facts of coconut" etc etc...does anybody get what I mean? I just wanted to know who could eat a bagel or not. Thats it!!!

I guess you feel to answer the question, you need to take a "stance"....Whatever. I wasnt asking for opinions or eating plans. I asked a SIMPLE question.  Again, thanks everyone *****sponded answering the QUESTION.   Wow, nothing is sacred in this place, huh?

I'm a school teacher, so my take on this is a little different. When you say "can you eat a bagel?" some people will read this to mean you are really asking "May I eat a bagel?" I frequently get my high school students asking "can I use the restroom" but the teachers on our campus are so literal about it, and correct the kids so often, that the REST of the kids will say "May I" before the teacher has the chance to correct them.  Your original post was ambiguous, and just because you clarified it halfway through does not mean that everyone actually READS the whole thread before responding to the original post. (I often read these boards during my lunch (10 minutes) and don't have time to read all responses before replying, so I wouldn't have seen your clarification)  In the end a bagel is not worth getting into a huff about, y'know?  I love bagels and I love bread, I can eat a TREMENDOUS amount of bread (I'm pre-op).... but that is one of my trigger foods, that helped make me fat to begin with... so even if I CAN eat a bagel I probably won't until 6 months to a year out... and probably not then.

I can eat a half of a bagel, and I'm 9 months out. Any more and my pouch would not be a happy camper. Oh, and I eat it with light cream cheese or RF peanut butter :)

I guess everybody is so different....I can eat anywhere from 1/4 of a bagel if its toasted- to a whole one on whatever given day. Usually, though, I cant et a whole one....just yesterday, I was hungry, it was toasted, I ate it, and counted it for my lunch. But I was shocked I could eat it all....so wanted to take a "poll" I treat myself once a week with a bagel with schmear.....yummmmm still losing, no carb cravings afterwards. Looks like my RNY gave me what I needed....PORTION CONTROL!!!!!
