Has anyone heard of an MD not doing a swallow test after RNY?

I didn't have to have one done either. My doc said it was because they get too many false negatives.  My vitals were checked every 4 hrs and I had 3 labs drawn.  I was also eating yogurt, and drinking protein shakes, water, and juice the day after surgery.  My doc also requires his pts to stay at least 2 nights in the hospital.

My surgeon doesn't do a swallow test either.  He explained that they put everything under water, put a scope down then look for bubbles!  Made me feel like an old leaky tire, but they haven't had a leak in more than two years.  I was totally confident in his previous track record and technique.  As far as the hospital and being checked on.....I was thankful for their diligence, however, eager to return to my own home and bed for some actual rest.  Between the breathing treatments, blood draws and walking I was up or had someone in the room every hour or two.

It all depends on the surgeon. I had my leak test the day after my surgery. Friends of mine use a different surgeon in town...he checks for leaks while in the OR so his patients DON'T have a leak test done in radiology post op.

No swallow test here.  I feel completely comfortable that I received the best possible care.  My surgeon tests for leaks in the OR.  His office and the hospital where I had my surgery is a center of excellence.

I guess they are all so different. My surgeon does a check for leak in the OR, but also does a swallow test the day after surgery. I like that he was ultra careful.

No swallow test for me either.  Dr.  checks in the OR.  I was CONSTANTLY monitored for my stay. I got very few continuous hours of sleep. They had me on full liquids the next day.

I didn't have a swollow test.  Instead, the surgeon sprayed water on my surgery sites as air was pumped through my system.  If I would have had a disruption in the suture line, it would have made bubbles and he would have repaired it right then and there before closing me up!

Nope didnt have one, they did the water test for bubbles and thats it.  We saw a video at support group last night that showed how it worked.

No swallow test here. No drains here either for that matter. My surgeon has successfully done this surgery over 3000 times though, so I trust him. Been feeling just fine.

Since I have never heard of a swallow test, I'm pretty safe in assuming that my Doc doesn't do one. Now , he doesn't let you have diddly for a good bit after the surgery.  But no swallow test. No x-ray post surgery at all (except if it was done when I was zonked out).

I think it's dangerous to start suggesting someone is cutting corners to save money or is not meeting the standard of care. But that's just me.
