Anyone get pregnant post op - while on the IUD?
I had mine placed a month before WLS. My gyno had me come in about 4-5 days into my period. Was VERY uncomfortable but nothing compared to LABOR.LOL Take a few stron tylenol/ibuprofen/midol and should be fine. Actually I have forgotten to check for my strings. ( note to self to do that!) They can be accidentally pulled on and The mirena can be pulled out of place. I still have my period but is very irregular now and about 1/2 of what it was before. (which was the flood gates of H#$%)

I am a nurse and assist providers all the time with IUDs. If they are going to fall out they usually fall out in the first month. Checking for the strings is just a nice way to be reassured in case you suspect it falling out. The pinchy tool everyone is talking about that hurts is called a tenaculum. Everyone seems to react differently to it. You can always ask your doctor to apply some topical lidocain (i am sure most do anyway). But the person who said that having it placed when you are close to your period or (on your period) is right. When you are closer to your cycle your cervix is more open making it easier to place the IUD. The tenaculum is used ot help dilate the cervix.
I got mine in January 07. It was a horrible experience.
I have never had kids so it took him 3 tries (aka 3 kits) for it to work. The nurse thought that I was going to pass out and after the 2nd try I was waving my hands and barking at him to "forget it!!" LOL
I was in tears on the way home. The first few months was no fun either. I envy those who had no issues with installation or "set-up."

My placement hurt like hell. It was all I could do to NOT cry because of the pain. My poor nurse - I think I was holding her hand so hard she didn't have circulation for a while there. It felt to me almost worse than contractions! But I also heard from the Dr. that I was a tough insert. I also have (TMI here folks!) a very long vaginal canal - so that may have contributed to the problem.
I had cramping and bleeding and pain for the next week. I debated on going back to the Dr. and telling him to remove it. That being said - I LOVE IT!!!!
I have yet to hear of anyone who isn't happy they got it. I get very little to no cramping and my flow is almost non existant! I would go through all that pain again to get the IUD again. It really was worth it.

I love love love my Mirena IUD. I have 5 children and I am the most fertile person ever. I use to tell my husband that I could be gay and still get pregnant. The best thing about the Mirena is that I don't get TOM any more. I might spot once a month but a liner is good enough. I had mine for for the last 3 years and my husband is so happy that I don't get TOM anymore because with TOM I get PMS. If you are not planning to have children any more I would suggest it. If you do get it and want children after you might have a hard time having children 6 to 12 months after because your cycle has to come back.
