I honestly don't remember even saying goodbye to my husband in pre-op - I'm very susceptible to any alcohol or drugs, so that Valium in my IV certainly did the trick - The first thing I remember is waking up in Intensive Care (I didn't have a cpap machine, so the insisted on Intensive care for the first night) and my husband standing next to my bed.

No pain, no anxiety, nothing - I was very fortunate, and the surgical team did everything they could to ease my fears - The Anesthesiologist will talk with you before the surgery, and they'll do whatever they can to help - also, if they don't, tell a nurse or your surgeon (when I had my hysterectomy 5 years ago, it was my surgeon who ordered the Valium for me)

Good luck, you're in my thoughts!

I've had a few surgeries that there is only one time I was aware of being extubated.  They put you out with the IV so you shouldn't be aware of being intubated at all.  I have sleep apnea so the anesthesiologist left the tube in until I was in teh recovery room.  I was alseep and dreaming when I had a brief soreness in my throat.  Then they were waking me up.  I remember being very mad because I was sleeping so good!

They don't intubate people awake.  At least not anymore.  If there is an emergency they do what is called rapid onset sedation to do an intubation.

I have strong gag reflex, but having had 8 surgeries that involved intubation, I can say with 100% certainty that I don't recall any of them.

I dont remember any of that either. Woke up with oxygen cause my sats went down constantly in surgery and had to be brought in and out of sleep. The only thing I remember is the stupid oxygen alarm going off everytime I drifted to try and sleep. I woke up with only the foley and had that till the next morning.

HI I am 10 days out, and did not  remember a single thing waking up.  I didn't have any tubes in me other than the oxygen and a cathader (yuk)  but that doesn't hurt, and it makes it much easier for the first night after the surgery,  I didn't have a drain, which was nice, I just had an IV for fluids which isn't too bothersome,  Don't get yourself worked up over things that you cant prevent, I was SO worried about the catheter because I had never had anything like that, all in all  it was fine and really not a big deal, You will see that your fears although warranted, will not even arise once you get into the pre op room

All the times I have had surgery plus the RNY, I was out for the intubation and extubation.  I have a very sensitive gag reflex and I am a singer so I asked for a pediatric tube.  Good Luck!

I've had four major surgeries, one was even emergency, and I never remembered the tubes in my throat. The NG tube that some docs use were never used for me the two times I had abdominal surgery, so not all doctors do that. The worst surgical experience I had ws my emergency cholecystectomy (gallbladder) I woke up in recovery literally crying and screaming in pain.... I remember the recovery room nurse being mean to me and telling me to shut up, turns out I'd had a fairly serious complication and was back in the OR, but even so, no recollection of tubes or stuff like that.

I'd say that in 99.999% of cases you won't have any recollection of anything going on in hte OR>

it's funny, that was exactly what I was afraid of as well.  I do not remember a damn thing about tubes, needles, or anything randomly weird.  In fact, the most weird part of the entire thing for me was when I woke up in my bed and my first thought was "how many people did it take to pick me up off the operating table and get me into this bed..." *laugh*  Don't worry babes.
