Cheeseburgers & fries after bypass? How is this possible?

My girlfriend, 9 months out from surgery, said she can eat a cheeseburger & fries from a restaurant (ok, 1/2 the burger & she takes the rest home for the next day)  Can you really tolerate a burger & fries after surgery?  I thought the grease/fat would make you very sick?  She also eats bacon & eggs once a week for breakfast (1 scrambled egg & 2 strips regular bacon) that she has no issues with.

I am having my surgery soon- I thought you would have to eliminate many foods forever, like macaroni & cheese, bacon, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc.  Can any of you post-ops help me with this

I've been known to taste a few (like 1, 2 or 3, not 20!) french fries, though I don't make a habit of it.  This past summer around 7-8 mos. out, I had a smallish hamburger and bun at a barbeque, and I was fine, though I felt a bit full; not uncomfortable, but fuller than I like.

I don't eat like this regularly, not because I CAN'T, but because I DON'T WANT TO.  Having such foods on a regular basis was how I ended up having RNY surgery, so I don't.

I go to McDonald's sometimes and get a 4 piece chicken nugget happy meal and eat it all.  I eat burgers (less the bun) all the time.  Bacon?  OMG!  Did I mention the burger less the bun almost always has bacon on it?  I eat Mac & cheese.  Usually it's just a spoonful with my meal.

Of course I am almost 3 years postop and at goal.  I've been eating anything I want in moderation since I made goal almost 2 years ago.  I even splurge beyond moderation on planned events and watch carbs for a few weeks afterwards to make up for it.  I guess you could say I eat like a normal, thin person my size should eat.

Terri R.-- That's what  I wanna hear!!  That once you reach goal, you can eat like a normal person -- just  much less!!  I've been fretting not being able to eat the foods I love when I can -- scared that I will give up and ruin my RNY.  But knowing that I can eventually have them all in moderation or small amounts, is satisfying enough and does give me hope for a normal future!!  Thanks!

Bacon.. Mac and Cheese.. Hey now.. you're sounding like a DSer...  (totally kidding)

But seriously, this post really backs up my decision to have an RNY in Feb.   I can't wait to be able to say this " I guess you could say I eat like a normal, thin person my size should eat."

Some people can tolerate almost anything, but for me I have decided to make better food choices instead of eating all that greasy foods.  If I crave fries I had oven baked fries( just a couple) and as for burgers I have switched to grilled veggie burgers.  It is about making healthier choices without feeling deprived.

I occasionally eat burgers and fries. Not a whole burger, and not a whole order of fries. It really just doesn't have the appeal it once did. I eat mac and cheese, made with dreamfields low carb noodles. Eggs and bacon are good protein choices, as long as you drain the grease.
I am 5 years post op and can eat anything in moderatio. I choose healthier foods the majority of the time.

Hell yes.  In fact - burgers are a staple in my diet.  I tend to throw away much of the bread, because the sticky white ****ty bread that most restaurants use is what gives me a problem, but I can eat fat to my hearts' content.

Fries, I can eat a few, more than a few this far out.  I don't want to, but I can and I do.  They don't make me sick immediately, but the fact that they are a carbohydrate causes a reactive hypoglycemic event about 60-90 minutes later if I have too many.

So, I guess the thing is - Your Mileage WILL VARY.  You learn what works for you.

For me - FAT IS GOOD and WORKS.

Carb ARE EVIL and MAKE ME COMATOSE.

It's just too bad that our brains require them to function.

I am the exact same as you Beth.  I can do fat without issues and lot of it if I want to.  Carbs always put me into a coma then into a hypoglycemic even every stinking time I eat them.  Without fail!  The only carbs that don't drop me are nonstarchy salad type veggies.. I make them my staple b/c they will not drop me.  It sucks doesn't it, but carbs are what got me heavy in the first place.  Hope you are doing better with your seizures..

I eat hamburgers all the time!!  I usually don't do fast food, but I love to make burgers on my Forman Grill.  I eat them without a bun (much to filling for me) and I will bake a few fries in the oven (usually sweet potato fries).

I am almost 3 years out, and I can eat almost anything I want, in moderation.  I also thought I would need to eliminate certian foods from my diet, but have found that is not the case.  I make healthy choices, and have learned to prepare my favorites in a more healthy way.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery!!
