Anyone wish they had Lap Band instead ??
I originally wanted the lapband, but ended up going with the RNY because I had a major sweet tooth pre op. The RNY limits or even sometimes prevents you from consuming large amounts of sugar (you'll get sick and dump usually) and that was my big problem. I was self pay, so I could basically pick whichever surgery I wanted, so I chose RNY. My Mom had it 5 yrs ago and has done really well and has kept her 100 pounds off. I've also had 4 other family members that have had the RNY and are all doing well.
After I had my RNY, I read more about the VSG and always wondered if I should've done that. I know for sure though that I wouldn't have gotten off as much weight with the VSG as I have with the RNY. I would've been happy getting to 200 pounds, but I WANTED to get to 130/140! With the VSG though, you can take NSAID's (which would be great for me since Tylenol doesn't work for me) and you don't have that malabsorption that the RNY has. But the VSG is pretty new and still experimental- the RNY has been done for something like 30 yrs and is proven to work.
So I'm happy for the most part that I had my RNY, so glad I did it!! I lost 100 pounds in 6 months, the lapband couldn't do that for me! I am able to eat sweets still, but in very small amounts. It's a little frustrating to juggle a vitamin schedule, get 64+ oz of water in a day, and make sure to get enough protein in....but doing that is a heck of a lot eaiser than trying to lose 130 pounds on my own and not succeeding! I hated carrying around all that extra weight and hating my life- RNY has given me my life back! GL to you!

Yes. I'd have much rather kept my lapband(s) - both of them! After 4 yrs of messing around with TWO of em. 3 surgeries later, I still wound up with RNY 4 yrs down the road. Today I weigh 100 lbs. 4 yrs after my band journey(s), I still weighed 200 on a 5ft frame.
We all have our 'druthers'. I would love to have had my band stay put with no problems, it didn't work that way and as you can see from above, I'm not the only one.
Your journey will be your own and for your own reasons, just go in with your eyes open and don't fall into the belief that either surgery is a 'fix all' without pitfalls and sidetracks along the way.
Good luck to you!

Thank you to everyone who posted comments. I'm taking each and every one of them to heart and really appreciate you all taking the time to reply to my post. I have been leaning towards RNY all along, (love carbs, think I need the dumping or the fear of dumping).
I wish you all the best with your journeys and value your experience. Keep sharing!!!!

Just like others, I thought about the lap band at first. However, my starting weight was 337 pounds and my surgeon recommended RNY. Also, I wasn't thrilled about going in for fills and such with the lap band. I love the decision to have RNY and I've never regretted a minute of it.
Best wishes to you as you make your decision and begin this journey.

I had the lap band for 2 years and went through evil spouts of not even being able to keep down a protein shake or water at times. Everything was fine the fist year and I lost 50 lbs, but problems started at 12 months. After fills and unfils that went on for over a year - every 4 to 6 weeks. I decided to have a revision to the bypass. I can say after having BOTH surgeries I believe life with RNY has been much better for me. I have lost 30 lbs in 8 weeks ( I was considered a light weight for the RNY after having lost weight with the band). Most things that I have tried to eat at this point have stayed down. Of course, I still have problem foods and that is with any wls. After my band was removed my surgeon told me that there was nothing wrong with the band or the placement. He strongly believes that my body was just rejecting a foreign object in my body. At the time I wished my band would have work for me, but now I realize it wasn't what my body needed. RNY has been a huge blessing!!!
