Is it the cheese? (1 year labs are in)

I just got my lab report and, surprisingly, everything is in check except for a few things:

1.  My "alkaline Phosphatase" is low.  I have no idea what that means
2.  My vitamin D is low (going to get the prescription on Monday)
3.  My LDL cholesterol is high!!!!

I have no idea what to do about this.  That's the bad cholesterol and it's 33 points too high!  No more cheese?  Like seriously?  My surgeon didn't do anything but circle it on the lab report.  He didn't recommend doing anything about it.  Is this by virtue of having a higher protein diet.  Should I lay off the cheese?  Am I going to get heart disease?  Do I have to stop eating cheese?  I eat plenty of good fats, so my good cholesterol is good.

Did I remember to ask if this will affect my cheese intake?

Mine was high also, Nik.  My surgeon says that it isn't the surgery, isn't the diet--probably genetics and has referred me back to PCP to see if they want to start me on some meds.  I don't want started on meds, but don't want to risk cardiac issues either.

Not much help, but I"m with ya!!

 Pssst.

Hey Nik.

It could be the cheese.

1.  A low reading apparently indicates possible malnutrition or lack of nutrients in the body.  Makes since because we're bypassed.  Might want to talk to doc about this to see if there are other results that contribute to this reading.  http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/alkaline-phosphatas e

2. I was on the Rx of Vitamin D -- 50,000IU once per week -- the little green gel cap.  It didn't do much.  Ask for Vitamin D3 instead.  You might need to buy it from Vitalady -- that's the only place I've seen it for sale in that high a dose for dry Vit D3.  This will be better absorbed by the body AND D3 stays in the body longer than D2 (which is what the Rx is).

3. How does this cholesterol reading compare to your last draw?  You might still be 30 points above normal, but you might be seeing a decrease in the total number since surgery... so compare old reports to this one.  I doubt it's the cheese.  Here's a link with some good infor in general about cholesterol  http://www.full-health.com/partoneF.htm

I did it first thing in the morning and I'd only had a Crystal Light beforehand.  Nothing since the night before at about 8.

Well I don't know how strict it is, but my doc said that if its not a true FASTING lab, the results are skewed. She FLIPPED at my cholesterol level at my 6 month labs.. I swear to god she was ready to throw me down and brillo my arteries right there, then asked "Wait, was this a fasting lab??"

My surgeon doesn't do fasting though - so my cholesterol always shows a little off.

I have a file around here somewhere with all my lab reports.  I did something with it during Christmastime though.  I'm gonna get a copy from my surgeon on Monday and look.

My mom says high cholesterol runs in our family though.  So I'm due for my annual physical with my PCP and when I go we're gonna talk about this.

High cholesterol does apparently have a strong genetic component. My parents are both on Lipitor...but then again they're both MO/SMO and both eat lard by the bucketful. Dad's a dairy farmer. Cholesterol is our business.

My cholesterol, on the other hand, went from 280 to 140 in the first year. :)
