sugar question

I have not had surgery, but I am on my diet waiting for the dr. to put me on a pre-op diet.  Anyways,  I have it in my mind I can not have ANY sugar after the surgery for fear of dumping.  Right now, I use super advanced whey protein powder with 26 grams of protein.  I only mix it with water and sometimes add peanut butter.  My questions is:

This mix has one gram of sugar and I know the peanut butter has sugar.  Can I continue wiith this protein since it is the only one I found I really like and can tolerate?

When there is sugar in a food, is that food off limits?

I know alot of foods have sugar and I always try to get SF, but some things can't be helped.

I also drink LOTS of SF kool-aid I get from walmart, but I would like to find something where I can get my protein in my drinking too.  Any suggestions?

Please let me know.

After surgery you should absolutely avoid sucrose (table sugar).   Naturally occurring sugars such as fructose and lactose may be ok.  Many have trouble with lactose post op though so you may end up lactose intolerant.  I can deal with lactose and fructose in small quantities in prepared products.  I can eat most fruit as well (although for some reason I've shied away from citrus fruits).  Things with milk will always have sugar in them as well as things with fruits.  You'll just have to learn your tolerance post-op.

Hope that helps a bit.  As for the drinks, you can get RTD protein shakes (and most likely you'll be doing some type of shake post op because you can't get enough protein from food or regular drinks).  There is also South Beach Protein water mix as well as Special K protein water mix.  There is also a bunch of other protein drink products on the market (Nectar, Unjury to name a couple) that make non dessert-y flavored drinks.  Some even come unflavored so you can mix it with your favorite drink.

Every doctor is different, so ask your doctor what s/he recommends for sugar content after surgery.  My doc's recommendation is no item of food with more than 6g of sugar per serving, and no more than 11g of sugar per meal.  I do have a couple of protein bars that run on the high end (10-12 g of sugar) but I use those sparingly.

It is close to impossible to have 0 sugar diet.
We need to avoiding sugar because:
1. it is addictive, the more you have - the more you crave it
2. limits weight loss
3. we can dump on it (only some of us do, and every one limit is different)

After surgery it is best to avoid products with a high % calories from carbs and sugar.  You personal experience will help you establish your "dumping" (if any) level.  It is best not test the waters because: 1. you may not dump at all (not so good) 2. if you dump - the dumping itself may be very painful and not nice (trust me).

Saying that - you will find out, if you dump, that you may dump on different sugar/fat grams depend on a day.  One day 10 gr will be fine, while another day just 5, may make you sick, when the next 15 will be just fine.  It is quite unpredictable as your tummy heals in time. I found out (the hard way) that when I am stressed - all predictions are off - what and how much I can it, and how would I feel.  Just the nature of my new plumbing.  Life, I guess.

Milk - has sugar, always.  I found out that I may be OK with 6 oz, but more than that over 4 hrs time - it is not recommended (LOL)  -  that for me means only one medium latte per visit in Starbucs.  And no yogurt with that...lol...
Another sugar - Sugar alcohol- is also item you will have to figure out.   Some of us can tolerate (beside some - or a lot of gas), but others can not.  And product can be labeled Sugar Free, and contains a lot of sugar alcohol.  (like ready to eat SF pudding in grocery stores...)

Hope I did not scare you too much... Good luck...

Yeah sugar,...omg no.  I once like 3 months after sugery added a pinchfull of Honey Nut cherrios into my Regular Cherrios and some milk,.....yeah i almost died. Never again had the most horroble dumping EVER! Double whammy...Honeynut and milk,..yeah....NO!  I strictly adhered to my Doctors orders,.no more then 3 grams of Sugar. I watched it like a hawk but other things would also get me in dumping like Cashews or other nuts. Things are different now, also plz remember the Human Body adapts to anything and it learns well.

I stick with the rule that sugar grams are in the single digits per serving. This works for me.

I do have 2 exceptions - Non fat milk and fruit
