The Down and Dirty on Dumping

Hiya all.  I'm still at the mushy phase so I'm not in danger of dumping yet, however dumping scares the CRAP out of me and I DO NOT want to do it....soooo

I thought it was only sugar that caused dumping....but I think someone said they dumped on tomato soup?  So, WHAT EXACTLY CAUSES DUMPING?

I've resigned myself to never having sugar again, but what else do I need to avoid?  And I'm assuming by sugar what I mean is processed ADDED sugar and not natural sugar....like the kind you find in fruit??

Any help would be appreciated!

Sugar and fat cause dumping. I dumped WORST on tomato soup. It was partly my mistake. It was the Campbell's Soup-at-hand (I think) and three or four types had GREAT numbers on the label. When hubby brought me some tomato, I didn't read the label, since all the others had good fat/carb/sugar numbers. BAD MISTAKE as their Tomato soup has 24 g of sugar in it!!!

Yes, the processed sugar is the "bad" stuff... but even natural sugar can cause you to dump. I've heard of folks dumping on watermelon. I can have dark chocolate (with sugar, yes) and I don't dump, and I can have a whole banana and I don't dump, but highly processed foods make me dump. I can sometimes dump on no-sugar-added hot cocoa, and the lest "balanced" I feel... the more off-kilter due to my emotional state, or physical state, the more likely I am to dump.

Don't be terrified of dumping, but do use it to help you to be moderate in what you do.

Don't assume you won't be a fruit dumper. I have had my WORST dumps on pineapple and mango and I had but a few bites of each.

You can dump on fat, sugar, and carbs. You can dump on only fat, or a certain level of fat with carbs. Or carbs with X grams of sugar. Or sugar with fat. Or just plain sugar. Or just plain fat. Or just good old fashioned carbs (although it is MUCH more difficult to dump on complex carbs because of the lack of insulin response from them).

Dumping is fickle. To ultimately fear dumping at all would mean you could only drink water ever again to avoid it. Just live your life as healthfully as possible and avoid obvious dump worthy foods and you will be fine.

Just remember one persons dump does not another persons dump make. Just make the best possible decisions for you and learn what triggers it. I have a feeling you're going to be just fine as long as you follow the cardinal rules.

What exactly are the cardinal rules? I'm confused on dumping too (very new)... I have a label in front of me, what do I look for and what is actually considered high?

Protein first, complex carbs second, limited refined carbs (simples), no drinking with meals EVER or for 30-60 mins after a meal (your # of mins may vary per surgeons recommendation). Those are all of mine.

I've refined mine to work within my meal planning but I focus on protein forward meals, HIGH dietary fiber every day with my complex carb intake, and well over 100-120 ounces of water a day. This is what works for me. But keep in mind I'm almost 2 years out and have been working at this a loooooong time so I'm so in the groove of them I hardly think of them anymore. I say find what works for you but always keep the very simple set of cardinal rules in the forefront of your mind when choosing how to eat for ultimate lifelong success IMO.

Congrats and wishing you the most success honey!!

ETA: The reason I suggest following the cardinal rules  besides them being the ultimate key to success IMO is to possibly prevent dumping. When you have nice good protein in your gut before you eat something that might be dump worthy it takes more time for the insulin response to happen (which is what dumping is). Lets say you want to eat some watermelon. If you choose to have it at the end of your meal (after your two ounces of chicken lets say) you will have way less room to get a lot in AND the protein in your pouch will slow the watermelon down enough so you won't have the possible insulin response from i****ermelon on an empty tummy could be asking for trouble. As is anything liquid - fat, carbs, or sugar (like some soups,  juices, syrups, ice cream (duh), etc. If you have something slow down the food that you may dump on then the possibility decreases (but does not disappear). I wish there was a better way to prevent it but until you know how you tick you just have to live it to find out.

Ah ok, well I know the dietary rules just not exactly rules within the whole dumping issue. That makes a lot more sense though to read it all broken down. I always thought it was just when you ate stuff in high sugar that moved through your body too fast but I didn't realize it was an insulin response etc. so thanks for everything!

I had one too many grapes last week and dumped.  High sugar (even natural) and high carbs will do it to me.  Fat, however, won't.

Sugar alcohols always make me dump.

Jen's words are great.

Also keep in mind that you may never dump, and that dumping, if you do it, is often not the earth-destroying experience that some folks make it out to be. it's very individualistic.

Hi Everyone Will dumping be like baby accidents in your undies? I'm scheduled for surgery on Feb 25th and I'm really concerned about dumping. Can anyone share some personal experiences? Will dumping sneak-up on you, where you have accidents? Thank you. Maria
