Use a pedometer?

Based on the best evidence as of the end of 2003, Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke recommends the following:

Classification of pedometer-determined physical activity in healthy adults:
1) Under 5000 steps/day may be used as a "sedentary lifestyle index"
2) 5,000-7,499 steps/day is typical of daily activity excluding sports/exercise and might be considered "low active."
3) 7,500-9,999 likely includes some exercise or walking (and/or a job that requires more walking) and might be considered "somewhat active."
4) 10,000 steps/day indicates the point that should be used to classify individuals as "active".
5) Individuals who take more than 12,500 steps/day are likely to be classified as "highly active".

I have a few, actually and have to get into the habit of wearing one again.  My job is VERY sedentary (research and writing in front of a computer all day) but I know last time I wore one with any regularity, while I didn't really make it to 10,000 steps/day, it certainly was a reminder to get up more!

Since I have a few, I should just leave one here at work - thanks for the nudge.....

One hour of walking plus my normal activity puts me at 10,000.

I may be feeling a tad *****y at the moment, but I REFUSE to try to incorporate more than an hour of cardio a day in my life. I'm just not willing to live my life like a biggest loser contestant. It will never be something I can maintain. I'm looking for a way to maintain long term and more than an hour day will probably not be it. just being honest.

My husband and I have them and they do motivate you to try to get more steps in. I get in 10,000 - 12,000 most days and that is okay with me. I walk about 3 MPH so it takes a while but since I don't have to go to work each day and also have to walk the dog, it all helps get those numbers up.

I'm going to have to try to use a pedometer again, now that I have lost some weight.  I tried last year, but the thing would not stay hooked on my pants because of my fat roll.  I actually lost one, reaplaced it, found the 2nd one on the floor and gave up.

They are giving all the trainers at the Y a pedometer tomorrow.  It's one that will upload our steps into a computer system each time we come into work.  I'm going to be interested in how many steps I take a day.  I'm on my feet running around like a mad woman the first part of the day and sit on my bottom the second part of the day.  I'll let you know what I average.

Apparently on school days I am about 10k, on weekends more like 13k.
