clear liquid diet

My surgery is this friday and my surgeon put me on a 5 day clear liquid diet.   I'm having a horrible time with the broth part.  I have tried several and they all taste rancid to me.

Today I ended up taking a can of campbell's chicken noodle soup, straining the liquid and adding some water to thin it out a little.  It was pretty good.  I don't know if that's allowed but I needed something other than the sweet I was getting from the popsicles and jell-o.

I'm looking for any other broth suggestions.... brands, etc.

thanks :)

I do the same for chicken broth. How about french onion soup by Pregresso, strain the onions out of it. What about the broth from wonton soup? I remember doing that as well. Something different and it was pretty good. I think they charged me like a 1.00 for as I told them all I wanted was the broth no wontons. :-)

Good Luck!

I am doing clear liquids too for surgery tomorrow.  I have been making my own stuff, french onion soup strained, chicken soup strained, etc.  I would say go by the store and pick up broth, onion, carrots, celery and some bones, like chicken or beef, and make your own, it won't taste so funny like straight from the container.  I've been saving a little too for post op, even though I am told I won't want anything, I knoow I;ll have to have something.  Just be careful while at the store, I wanted to eat so bad when I smelled that fried chicken they sell there...  Had to remind myself, "major surgery, don't screw it up."  Good luck friday.  Just drank my magnesium citrate and am waiting for the, well, you know...

I had to do the same thing but my doctor allowed me to have low fat cream soup too, like cream of chicken and cream of mushrooms. And I must say that's what got me through.

Doing the clear liquid diet too.  Tommorow @8:45 a.m. is my surgery.  Boy are you right about the food smells--everything smells better now that I can't have it! lol.  I have done both the chicken and the french onion--minus the onions of course.  Good luck--can't wait to get started.

I've been adding crushed red pepper, black pepper, or different seasonings to my broth to make it a little more tasty. Do you think it's ok to do this? I haven't asked the dr.'s office.

My doctor is one of the toughest - we get to do several weeks of nothing but clear liquids!

I tried everything I was possibly allowed to have, just to have some sort of "variety", but it was still tough. Luckily it is only a relatively short phase, you'll get through it.

When you're tempted to cheat, come look at the before & after photos, they are so inspirational, they'll keep you on track.

Good luck!

P.S. a whole year later, and I still can't even bear to look at SF jello  :-(
