No ice chips after surgery?
I've had a few minor procedures which required anesthesia. Each time I told the anesthesiologist that I get very nauseous. Every procedure they would add something to my anesthesia to prevent the nausea. But I still always woke up nauseous. Ice chips were the only thing that ever cured the nausea for me.
I read somewhere in my paperwork that we are not allowed to have any ice chips right away. Is this generally the case? What's the reasoning? I assume I shouldn't have too many to fill the pouch... but.... really?

I was NPO for 48 hours after surgery, though that is longer than it is for . No liquids of any kind. Usually the day after your surgery, you will go for a leak test to make sure the staple line is secure and that anything you consume will stay in the digestive tract. If you pass your leak test you will be allowed clear liquids. You will be given some moist swabs that you can use to keep your mouth from getting too dry. The third day after surgery they let me suck on ice chips, and it was wonderful!
I know all surgeons are different, but I had ice chips right in recovery. The next day after going for the "leak test" I vomited several times ~ boy did that hurt!!

I've been meaning to. Starting a list of questions for my last pre-op visit now. I don't have my hopes up too high. My step sis had the same surgeon on her RNY in June and I think she had to wait 24 hrs. I visited her the next day and she was sucking on a sf popsicle. Really just concerned about vomiting when fresh out of surgery and what it may do to my fresh wounds.
Thanks for the response, Lisa.
