No ice chips after surgery?

 Michelle,
I had never had any surgeries prior and woke up in recovery saying I was going to throw up.  The nurse said I was fine, but I insisted I was going to throw up....she gave me a pail and started anti nausea medicine immediately.  I continued those meds for the 3 days in the hospital!

As for the dry mouth, I was not allowed ice chips either until day 2, BUT I some one had recommended Oasis mouth spray.  It was great....it not only provided moisture, but the smell of peppermint helped with nausea.  I did ask before I used it and they said not a problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll check into getting some Oasis now.

Wow, it is amazing how different programs can be. I was allowed ice chips immediately following my swallow test.

I was allowed ice chips immediately after surgery. 1 medium chip every 15 minutes. I had no issues. Also, the morning of surgery, I was ordered to take a tablet for nausea. I don't remember the name but it was a script I had to pick up the day before. The one tablet was $60 but I had no nausea whatsoever after surgery.

I was not allowed ice chips. I had them bring me ice water and those foam mouth cleaners and I kept using those, being careful not to swallow any of the water. I also used lip moisturizer constantly. I have Palmer's cocoa butter/chocolate mint, it lasts quite a while. Ragalyn worked best for me in the hospital. At home they gave me Phenegren and it knocks me out.

I, too, would always have problems with nausea and vomiting after surgery.  As it turned out, each time I was being given morphine for pain and that was causing the nausea.   Now, I just tell them that I am allergic to morphine and they give me another kind of pain medication and I am just fine.   Have you thought that you may be allergic to the pain meds after surgery?   Just thought it might be worth looking into.  There is nothing worse than being nauseus right after surgery!
