No ice chips after surgery?
I wasn't allowed any ice chips or water or anything either until I was discharged, about 24 hours after surgery. I got up and brushed my teeth every hour or so when i'd walk the floor to keep my mouth "clean" feeling. I wasn't dehydrated because i was on an IV but my mouth felt so dry.

I weighed 313 pounds on December 1, 2008 the day of my RNY surgery and have lost 81%
of my excess body weight to-date. Current as of November 1, 2009
OH Mini-Challenge Goal for New Year's Day is 170 pounds. 11 pounds to go!
My surgery will be on a Monday (he does them all on Monday) and nothing allowed that whole day - then Tuesday morning I go for the swallow test to make sure there is not leaking and after that, I can have water and ice chips.
Definitely going to look into Oasis! I'm going to be dying - I love my water!

Every time I've had surgical procedures with anesthesia I have become extremely nauseous as well. They gave me all kind of stuff prior to surgery and a patch behind my ear of anti-nausea medicine. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. As soon as I had my dry heaving (nothing in my tummy to come out) I was fine.
As for ice chips, I wasn't allowed to have any liquid until after the leak check. Thankfully my leak check was about an hour after I got to my room. (Which is when the dry heaving occurred. They tried to wait until the next day, but I was adamant that I could do it...I wanted something wet!) Within hours of my surgery I was able to have ice chips and clear liquids.

I appreciate everyone sharing your experiences, suggestions, and support. I'll be prepared and I know what to expect now. Recently got my surgery date and reality is setting in. Just trying to face facts ahead of time to hopefully prevent a melt down when Big D Day* arrives.
*My surgeon's nick name is Bid D. So I have decided to refer to my surgery date as Big D Day.
Yes, I'm a nut.
Thank you!

Wow, I was allowed water starting when I got to my room after leaving recovery. My surgeon used to do the barium swallow but they were finding absolutely no leaks in any patient so they stopped them unless it appears something is wrong. I started my sip, sip, sipping right away. Would have been HELL if I couldn't have. I was so dry mouthed and thirsty.

I was not allowed ice either....I was given the spongy sticks in ice water....(they also use them to clean out your mouth when people cant brush their teeth for other issues) they have a minty tastes
I do want you to ask about the chap stick.....I mentioned it once to a pre op in regards to what to put in her bag for her stay and someone else on that particular board stated that it is not allowed what so ever (I guess maybe it causes excess salivation....not sure) by their dr and his program.....but like everyone prior to me has posted every surgeon and every program is different. My surgery was 8 yrs ago but to hear newbies and pre ops talk it seems like it was 30 yrs ago.
Anyhow....good luck with it.
