What will happen if you cheat on your post-op diet?
I'm one week out, am going thru various phases of hunger, but am managing. I'm not going to, but I was just wondering what would happen if one cheated on their liquid post op diet? Can it cause permanent damage? Does it stretch out your new pouch? I know the reason for being on the diet is to allow your stomach time to heal.
I was just wondering.
I was just wondering.
Most likely it would just cause vomiting, like if you ate solid food too soon, or if you ate too much. I guess if you really stuffed yourself with solid food you could damage the pouch, like damage the staple line or something. And yes, if you overeat, it could stretch out your pouch. I think you would need to really eat a lot though, and on more than one occasion. Most likely you would just get sick.

I to am one week out. had it on the 23rd. (so 10 days)I ate tuna today. I am scared. Not getting full feeling. I'm not hungry but I ate 4 ounces in an hour. Going to call my nut tomorrow and my doc. But it was 22 grams of protein and one less shake. I feel fine. No please don't start flipping out. I was just feeling lightheaded and it wouldn't go away. I just put salt, pepper and garlic.
I have been doing 4 carb advantage shakes a day and maybe a pudding. Lost 15 pounds so far.

I think the main reason for the liquid diet is to allow your new food 'pathway' time to heal. It would take a brave soul to risk damaging the tract/pouch after just a week or 2. Things are still swollen down there and food can get stuck fairly easily at 1 week out. Your mind may be playing hunger games on you.
I'm three weeks out today and just eating cottage cheese for the first time (heaven!).
In my "doc talk," the surgeon said that one of her patients was feeling so good after the first or second week that she went out and had a whole Subway sandwich and a glass of milk. She ended up blowing out her pouch, back in the hospital for a couple weeks. Now, that's an extreme cir****tance, but it did help me get through the liquid phase which just ended for me. I would imagine if I ate something offensive I would get sick or dump, perhaps.
YMMV.

Each program is different. Our program here, had me on pureed food on day two. Small amounts, but non the less it was pureed. We did our liquid stuff 2 weeks prior to surgery.

Not that I am being judgmental here but, as a theoretical question, why would you want to? You've come so far already - hang in there!!! I am one week out and really wanting to eat some "real" food too but I am not in any way willing to risk damaging my pouch. The doctors are the experts so there is obviously a reason they don't want us to eat anything. Keep your eye on the end result and soon you will be able to eat more items. In the meantime, choke down more broth, sf popsicles, and anything else that is an allowed liquid you need to in order to make it through to the next stage. You can do it!!
