Eating pizza - before and after

Before surgery, my Pizza Hut consumption was as follows:

1/2 an order (6 pieces) of hotwings dipped in ranch dressing.
4 slices of a large pan pizza with extra cheese, either a meat lovers+olives or a ham and pineapple. Then I'd usually eat 1 or 2 more slices as a late night snack, and finish the hotwing order (if my son didn't get to them!). Then I'd go to bed. Oh yeah, did I mention the 2 cans of Coke to wa**** down with? My goodness, that has to be 3,000 calories!

I've been craving Pizza Hut deep dish pizza lately since I have not had it since before my surgery. I follow the rules, and have lost nearly 90 pounds at 5 1/2 months out. However, I am not militant about carbs and fat - I truly believe that this surgery is meant to enable me to still eat the foods I love, only in much smaller quantities. So I don't beat myself up when I sneak a piece of Halloween candy, or eat a slice of pizza. Compared to my pre-surgery eating, I eat like a bird now!

Tonight I got a medium ham and pineapple pan pizza from Pizza Hut, and I was only able to eat one slice (barely). Yes I ate the crust, and I enjoyed every last bite of it! It was yummy, but I can't physically eat another bite.

I love my RNY!

To the new post-ops who are nauseous and have no appetite, it DOES get better. I used to cry the first couple of months out of frustration because I could barely eat without gagging. Now I enjoy my food again, and I feel great. You will enjoy food again - just not anywhere near the quantities you used to enjoy.

I also love being satisfied with eating only one slice of pizza.  Pre-op, I could eat the whole thing.

I agree. Friday night is pizza night at our house. I can eat one slice, except for the big crust around the edge. I enjoy every bite!

Try this

I just copied this recipe from the MB, and am going to make it Friday night with the kids, and let them make thier own personal pizzas......

Thin and Crispy Pizza Crust
Heat oven to 450 degrees
In a bowl thoroughly combine
3 eggs
3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp basil
press evenly into Pam sprayed pizza pan or cookie sheet
(this makes one 16 inch pizza crust)
Bake at 450 degrees until golden brown (about 10 to 15 minutes)

Here is what your crust looks like after baking

What size is that? Is that a multi-person pizza or a personal pizza crust?

Just the three cups of lowfat mozzerella is 960 calories-- plus I presume you put more on top? And toppings? So we're talking about a 1200 calorie pizza?

Pretty crazy, I think, calorie wise. Even divided three ways it's pretty high.

Yes, however I cannot eat an entire one, so that's not that many calories for one meal.

Also, although I am concerned with calories, the kind of calories I consume are more important to me. I know not everyone monitors thier foods the same.

At over 5 years out, I have had 2 post op babies, and am only 8 pounds off from my pre-pregnancy weight. For me, staying at or around my goal has always consisted of healthier choices that satisfy me, and not calorie counting specifically. And it works for me.

If I I eat this type of pizza, it's a hell of alot better than having from a Pizza joint where the carbs are ungodly and the grease just lays on the toppings.

JMO, though.

I highly suggest staying away from pizza unless its a spacial once in a blue moon treat. The fat content alone makes me want to faint. When I need a fix I use whole wheat tortillas and low fat mozzarella. Very good. Please remember that this is a life style change not trying to find ways around so that we can get what we want. Pizza is a huge addiction for a great deal of people over weight. Just scroll down these message boards and you constantly see "when can I eat pizza?". "Will I ever be allowed to eat pizza?" and so on. Please remember that your body craves what you feed it. Feed it good stuff and sooner or later it will crave good stuff.

Yeah. I gotta disagree with you on this one. I am 2 years out and maintaining a 155 lb. loss. I too can only eat about a slice of pizza and I do. Lifestyle change means different things to different folks. To ME it means I eat the things I like in reasonable portions and in moderation when necessary (and I have to force moderation with some stuff but it works for me).

Denying oneself is one of the quickest routes to FAILURE. Why? Because it's a set up!

You tell yourself to stay away from the "bad" pizza and all of a sudden the pizza becomes a damn deity. You worship the pizza. You revere the pizza. All you can think about IS the pizza. Then when you "cave" and have a slice you are a failure.

I don't choose that narrative. My narrative is that I have an overall daily food budget that allows a certain number of calories, carbs, fat, and protein. IF, and only if, I can fit my slice of pizza in with what else I have going on that day, I have it. If there is something I want more than the pizza that makes it impossible to work, I have that. But I don't deny. I never deny. And I journal my food everyday and my calories are still 40% protein, 35% carbs, 25% fat.

So while I respect your disdain for pizza eating...I would encourage you not to project that onto other folks who have a system that works for them. If her system is she has a slice when she wants one, plans for it, accommodates it with activity and goes on about her life, I think that's fine. The surgery is not meant to address everyone's head issues the same way.
