Because pineapple is highly acidic, I'd avoid it for at least the first three to six months. Because it's high in sugar, I'd probably avoid it longer... if you dump. I dump, and at most have two small pieces (fruit salad sized) at a single sitting, and not often. Tastes good, but really doesn't feel good.

Lithia.....I don't know if I dum*****t, I'm going to assume I do, so I've been shying away from pineapple. Farther out about 6 months or so, do you think I could tolerate fresh pineapple? Reason I ask is there's always fresh pineapple on the dive boat and it's so refreshing and really sort of a good luck tradition, I'd sure hate to miss it when we go back in June!

You know, it's so hard for me to "get" what it would have been like to be in the category of those who don't know if they dump. I found out before I ever left the hospital!

If you want to avoid dumping, you'll want to keep the portions to a small amount. Some folks can't tolerate most of the fresh fruit because of dumping. For me, I've found that I tolerate natural sugars in fruit like I don't dump at all. The more processed something is, the more likely I am to dump. I ate like ten zillion cherries over the summer and didn't dump once.

If you're going to do the pineapple... try it first at home so you won't have to be with anyone if you dump. That's always been my fear... dumping in public.... mostly because I feel so awful. So try it on your own before trying it during some important event.

Thanks so much! That is good to know. Someone had given me a jell-o recipe that has whipped cream, jell-o and crushed pineapple in it, but didn't want to try it if it was to soon. I guess I will feed it to the family. LOL.. Thanks again

Hi Pretty Girl (CCH916),

I've had pineapple many times, the first time I was about 8 months post op.  I don't recall any problems at all, just be sure to chew it really well.

love your avatar!

I am only about 5 months out. I have had pineapple several times with cottage cheese. I think the combination of protein with the sugar in the fruit is helpful. I usually spit out the really fibery parts toward the center and just eat the tender outer edges.  I love pineapple and have had no problems.
