Vitamins/Protein Powder and HSA

My insurance changed as of 1/1 and I now have a HSA. I am trying to get info on if I can use HSA funds to pay for my protein powder and vitamins. What I am finding so far is that nutritional supplements cannot be paid for with these funds, but since this is now a medically necessary thing to do lifelong, there has to be a way. Does anyone else use HSA funds for these items and how were you able to get the justification? Letter from surgeon? Thanks in advance!

Wow...great question because I now have a HSA as of 1/1 as well!  I never even thought about using it for protein powders, suppliments and vitamins either but now you got me wanting to!

I know a number of people who use their flex account to pay for vitamins and protein powder.  They just get something in writing from their doctor.  You should check with your plan to make sure you can do that, though, and find out what kind of documentation they will require from your doctor.

I have a FSA account and with a letter from my doctor. I can use my FSA towards my vitamins and protien  powder (powder form only). It will not cover RTD, protien bars and other food like supplements.

Go to Bariatric Eating, general board and there is a topic  near the top of the page. FSA/HSA accounts.

The letter must be spelled out and include ICD 9 codes.
