Hi,
I was taking Adderall for ADD . At first the medication worked great  amd my doses were suppose to last about 4 hours each. They only last me 2 hours. Well I didn't  think  twice about having the Gastric Bypass Surgery. So my doctor  has been working with me ,we tried Adderall with Ritalin . Well the Ritalin made me feel like a zombie. The Adderall  works wonders but I'm on a high dose and I have to take it several times a day.  So now she has prescribed me Vyvance, which is a capule and I only have to take it 2 times a day.It is not extended release or time release. The Pharmacist said that it  is in a capsule and that the directions say you can open up the capsule and put it in water. Sorry  this is so long, but I needed to give you my background to get to my question. If I open up the capsule and put it in water, how is that going to work, I'm really confused?  Isn't it just going to go right out of me when I go to the bathroom and with this medication requires you to drink alot of water I want this medication to be the right one. So I need to know how this method works for someone who had Gastric Bypass. How will the medication be absorbed if I drink it with water?Does it go into my bloodstream?  Should I swallow the pill or open the capsule and put it in water?I'm so confused any advice or insight on how this works for someone who had Gastric Bypass. Also this medication is expensive because it is new and they don't make a Generic. I want to get the full benefits of the medication,so I need some help. Sorry this is so long.
Thanks,
Jenn

I don't have any experience with that medication-but check with your surgeon and see what they suggest.

Hi,
I desperate for someone who can help me regarding absorbtion. I know some of you might not be aware of the medication Vyvase. But  if you take a medication that you have to have any medication. I reallly need to know what happens if you open the capsule and drink the medication with water. Does the medication leave your body or does it go into your bloodstream? I have heard of alot of people putting their meds in yogurt. So I hope someone out there can tell me what would happen. Please read my post and yes it is long. I have to start this tomorrow. I really need some advice and the pharmasit is no help. My surgeon must have moved because i tried to contact him and all numbers are disconnected. Please anyone I really don't know what to do. Help
Thanks,
Jenn

My suggestion is to take it as a capsule unless you have trouble swallowing it.  Right after my surgery, my surgeon gave me pain pills.  My instructions were to take them whole (or cut in half).  I don't see why that particular medicine would absorb any differently than any other pill.

There are a lot of RNY people who take medicine for diabetes and high blood pressure.  They usually take it like a non WLS person.  As far as putting it in water, I've never heard of doing that.  I would imagine the taste would be terrible!  If you feel you should put it in something, try yogurt or applesauce.  The medicine should be absorbed by your body when it goes into your tummy and/or intestines.

I am not a medical professional and am only giving my opinion.

Good luck!

Hi Jenn...

I started taking Vyvanse in early 2009 and, so far, it has worked great.  But, I am not taking it for ADD... it was added to my regimen of anti-depressants to help with depression issues.  I just had my RNY 3 weeks ago, so I am going to see the psychiatrist tomorrow for the first time since surgery.  I was under the impression that Vyvanse is an extended release prescription, but I could be wrong.  The reason for my appointment tomorrow is so she can adjust my meds (I'm on a few different extended release meds, and she wants to make sure there aren't malabsorption issues).  She had mentioned prior to surgery that they might have to switch me to Adderol if there are any absorption issues with the Vyvanse.  Add me as a friend and send me a reminder... I'll reply and let you know what I find out after tomorrow's appointment.

Right after my RNY, I couldn't swallow pills for a month, so I had to get liquids, chewables or capsules that could be opened for all my meds.  A few of them were capsules that I opened and poured into applesauce.  Those were the directions from the pharmacist and were also in the packet insert from the manufacturer.  I never heard of pouring it in water.  I have also crushed pills and put them in applesauce.  It doesn't affect the absorbtion provided it is a capsule that is allowed to be opened.

I realize this is quite an old post, but I am giving my thoughts anyway! I am 4 yrs post surgery and  just like all the rest meds have been a nightmare! I started on Ritalin LA, and IR played with dosage, didn't like Adderall AT ALL! Went back to Ritalin LA 30mg 2xs daily, but that still wasn't enough! Just keep quitting on me sooner and sooner! I switched psychs and started on Ritalin 20mg IR in the am, 30 min later 70mg of Vycance. I have an extra 20mg Ritalin in the afternoon, but I don't feel I need it. This combo has been working wonders!!

Jenn,
I am not a medical professional but IMO - unless you have a running diarrhea - opening a capsule and drinking the water will add in absorption not limit it.  Since we do not the stomach - but a pouch - once the meds are dissolved in water - that shall add in absorption - make is faster - than if the capsule has to be dissolved inside your intestines.
Once we drink something - it gets absorb much faster than before RNY. i.e. alcohol - a few sips of wine - and I am "drunk" when before I barely felt it - since it went to my stomach - and it was mixed with enzymes, and other contents inside it.
