Do they really give you a nicotine test?

That is kind of hard to answer. I have never heard of that but then it really does depend on the surgeon. I dont want to stir you in the wrong direction, but I have to ask.....Did he say they give this test before hand? If so then I would tell.....If not I would not say anything! They nay push the surgery back. I remember before my surgery they said it was very important to stop but never said they would do a test. I am not a smoker though, but I really dont think they test for it. GOOD LUCK...

You need to tell the surgeon that you have been smoking even if just once. It affects your recovery and your breathing during and after surgery.  The anestesiologist needs to know as it affects how well you come off the breathing tube after surgery.

When checking in the morning of my operation and when doing the pre-op tests the week before, I had multiple people ask me "if I ever smoked" and if so "when was your last cigarette?".  The anesthesiologist asked me the same questions.

My surgeon will not operate on a smoker. And he did say he tested for nicotine. I assume that was part of the pre-op blood drawn. I quit smoking a month before the orientation seminar, 7 mos. before my surgery.  Thank God I did. I suffered a collapsed lung the day after my surgery, and I can't imagine how much worse it might have been if I was still a smoker.

There is only 2 types of Nicotine test URINR & Hair Follicle, of the 2 the urine is the most used, issue is the test is not accurate due to a variety of foods that contain natural Nicotine EXAMPLE: sweet potatoes, Tomatoes

you can do a google search for foods containing nicotine and you will be surprised, also the urine test has to be sent to a special lab and I understand the test can take weeks to perform, but they would not be able to cancel your surgery since even though a non smoker your diet may contain nicotine.

My friend had to quit for surgery with the Rx pill. After surgery she stopped taking the pill and started again; she has had issues with clotting. Please be honest with your doctors and ask for the Rx if you need to. My Mom is enjoying the vapor cigarette; she just needs to hold it.

I wish you wellCheri

It depends on the surgeon-WLS program.  Mine said he did test for nicotine, and in fact, I was bumped forward in the surgery que because the patient before me had failed. (She was prepped, had the IV and everything. They tested her that morning when she came.) Surgeon told her the surgery was off, to get dressed and go home, he wouldn't be operating on her until she was nic free for 6 weeks. Thankfully I quit back in 1996, my surgeon said he even had some people (if their spouse smoked) sleep in a hotel the day before to not get any second hand smoke and fail the test.  Each surgeon is different, but if yours says they test, take them at their word. Good luck.

Warmly,

Ducky

I am not a smoker but I was tested for nicotine in my system at my pre-op visit.  They made it very clear that surgery will be cancelled if nicotine was in my system.
