Gurgling, burping, and noises...oh my!!

Ok...I need to ask this...I am 6 weeks post op.  From the start, I have experienced spontaneous gurgling, burping, and noises creep up from the mid abdomen, up through my pouch (or either it is originating from the pouch??), and uncontrollably it finds it's way up and out.  There is no acid, no reflux, it's not nauseating, it is just uncontrollable, spontaneous gurgling, gassy stuff.  Some days are worse than others.  I have somewhat come to realize that it may seem to happen when I am kind of "empty"...and I have been experimenting with making sure I get some fluids in relatively quickly (but not overloading), or either eat something so that the insides have something to work on, and making sure I eat/drink regularly.  It is the most annoying side effect so far that I have been dealing with.  I had one day several weeks ago at a band parent meeting my son had for marching band that it decided to do it.  It was loud, and very embarrassing, and I felt very self-conscious. Of course it was 1 hr of quiet with people speaking, and my stomach/pouch is deciding to make all this noise. I did have a drink with me and just kept trying to drink to keep it under control.Didn't help a lot.  Today at work (I am a nurse), we had patients today and I am not kidding it was doing it all day.  The patients could hear it across the room.  When it would happen, I would apologize and say something nervous...like, "oh my, my stomach is just making noises right now".  Another time, I put my hand to my stomach and was like, "my goodness!"  I had several people say to me..."yeah, I'm hungry too"...or they looked at me and went..."was that me or you?"  It's kind of funny, but it is embarrassing honestly.  I feel like a pig.  But I am not trying it....at all!!!  Anyone else that is relative new post op experiencing this...and those of you who are farther out post op....does it go away!!!

I would appreciate ANY suggestions, or replies.   Thank you all!!!

Yes happened to me for first 3-4 months.  Can be embarassing!  Just don't take it as a sign that you are hungry.  I remeber getting my eye exam done and my stomach being loud as heck so i just came out and told him I had gastric bypass and that makes stomach gurgles.  lol.  thank goodness it odes go away.  I don't know the reason why it does maybe someone else knows!

No, not mistaking it for hunger.  Definitely isn't that, just experimenting to see if that helps at that particular moment.  I wanted to just tell them today that I had gastric bypass, but was so unsure of myself.  I will keep praying that it slows down soon.

Sorry to say this...I'm 5 years out and my pouch still does this. It does happen to me when I eat things like pudding, yogurt, oatmeal...things that are a bit mushy. Sometimes it happens when it's completely empty, so it does vary. But I must say, I'll take the gurgling noises over the extra 115 pounds any day!

I agree!!!  I don't think I wouldn't think anything of it if it was once in a while...but like today...it would just do it one right after the other...of course every time while I had a patient in the room.  Most of my food now is "mushy" stuff.  I was slowly working up to regular textured foods, following my guideline, then developed a stricture, and was back in the hospital several days and had an upper endoscopy with balloon dilation, and have another one scheduled for June 18, so I have been extended on the soft/mushy stuff for another several weeks.  Will be interesting to see if it goes away some with regular textured foods.  Thanks!

The same thing happens to me......but it happens everytime I eat or drink. I am a year out and honestly sometimes it sounds like I am a lion growling or roaring. I hate it! It is also very uncomfortable. I have tried so many different things to get rid of it but nothing works. My surgeon said it goes away for most people between 6 and 9 months. I think I may be stuck with mine unfortunately.

I had my sleeve done in January and here it is November and it just started doing that gurgling, burping sound this week. From my throat really.... doesn't seem to be my sleeve.  Weird.

Hi,

I had my new life given to me on aug 3, 2003.  I have lost (flucuating a bit one way or the other) approx. 157 lbs.  I had the RNY.  I too have guggling noises.  And to make it worse, I am a hairdresser who when my intenstines decide to "talk"  to me it always seems it right smack dab in my clients ear.  It does get embarssing, I must admit.  Most my clients have gotten used to it, but with some I do feel I need to explain.

I asked my PA at one of my yearly check ups about this issue and he explained that in the surgery when they bypass the intestine it now lies on the OUTSIDE of your new pouch.  Prior to WLS it was UNDERNEATH the stomach and therefore we didn't roar quite so loud.  I was relieved to hear his explaination.  I can't change it, but at leas now I 'know'.   He says it happens when we are digesting whatever we just ate........whether that be food or drink.  I sometimes grab a mint and suck on it for so I don't breath in my clients faces and even that seems to do it.  So, it does seem to be consistent with what my PA had said.  I have however found that when I eat solid food such as cheese or meat, I gurgle less.  It is more when I drink something or eat something the is less dense that it happens more.  And trust me, it doesn't go away.  I'm 6 going on 7 years out and it happens just as much as it used to.

Hope that at least helps you to understand your body talk (literally).  LOL
