Is insomnia common after gastric bypass?

Lady Jones,

I am 18 years out of gastric bypass and have suffered big time with the lack of sleep soon after having my youngest child, 11 years ago.

I had the open RNY done and I have done a ton of research on this surgery since having sleep issues. What I found is that when I had the gastric bypass done they took out the majority of my stomach and 2 ft of my small intestines. When they removed the majority of my stomach they took out part of the Jejunum. the jejunum allows much more absorption of nutrients in this part of the small intestine--most of the food absorption is done in this part of the digestive tract. Simple sugars, water soluble vitamins (except vitamin C and some Bs), I have asked my dr in the past about this and the reason I have lack of sleep but I have gotten no response. Please note that I am no dr, I did this research on my own and from what I have found, this is the only reason I have lack of sleep. The Jejunum absorbs the majority of your nutrients you when eat food, but if you dont have but a portion of the jejunum then you will not get the full nutrients of the intake of food whi*****ludes important vitamins from food. Hope this helps and I hope you bring this information to your dr. I am currently looking into liquid form of melatonin for sleep. Good luck to you

I've had insomnia on and off all my life, too, so it's not unusual.  I usually have insomnia right before school starts, and I'm used to working tired :)

I'm not sure if my current insomnia is WLS related or simply related to the lack of structure I have in the summer (wake up when I wake up, no significant transitions to the day, plenty of sleep, etc).

I've been waking up with chest pain...or, IOW, pain when I inhale like you get with a pulled muslce.  I'm a side sleeper and I wonder if it's to early to be sleeping on my side.  I definitely can tell that it pulls a bit on my incisions.

Sigh.  So many things going on at once!
