I'm allergic to my protein shake

I'm on Day 10 of my pre-op diet and I'm having some sort of reaction to my protein powder.  I'm using Unjury vanilla and strawberry.  Once I drink the shake it feels like I've swallowed a hairy gumball.  I don't have any other symptoms, and obviously it's not that severe since I've been using it for the last 10 days.

My nutritionist gave me a sample of isopure today.  My throat was still a bit hairy but that seemed to go down ok.  I'm really nervous about this because my surgery is on Monday and then I will be straight liquids for 16 days.

HELP!

Unjury and Isopure both contain whey isolate.  If you're allergic to it, then I would use a shake that contains egg white protein or soy isolate instead.

Hi Genise

I am sorry you are having trouble. Let me sort of think out loud about what this might be.

1. Usually actually allergy takes a little while to manifest itself, and usually it is more of a reaction in your entire system. You have perhaps hear of people with peanut allergies and how they their throat can tighten and they even have difficulty breathing. Their system goes in to a kind of shock.

2. Something in your stomach could be more like lactose intolerance, but there is only a fraction of a gram of lactose in one scoop. Many lactose intolerant customers use UNJURY without problems.

3. Can I ask what you are mixing the strawberry and vanilla with?

4. Just to be supercautious, maybe it would be good to avoid using UNJURY until you better know what is causing the problem.

5. You can either wait, and see, or you can of course return anything you buy from us, including opened containers.

6. If you want, we have dietitians here in the office...you can call and ask for one of them. There is of course no charge. 1 800 517 5111. Mon thru Fri 9 to 6

7. You can also email me at [email protected]
if you wish.

Kind regards

Thank you so much for the quick reply!

I'm using Unjury because I'm lactose intolrant and it was recommend the best product for me.  I'm using it in my coffee and mixing it was lactaid and sometimes water.

Right now it feels like there is a lump in my throat and my ears feel "funny" almost like an ear infection but not painful.  Sorry that I'm not describing this better

It's good to know about your return policy but I really liked the Unjury products.

ugh..this sucks!

Hi Genise

Why don't you give us a call and we can talk more...

The thing about the ears sounds a little bit more like allergy, but then figuring out the allergy is a larger process.

Typically, whey protein isolate is virtually lactose free...that is, a fraction of a gram per serving, which shouldn't cause trouble.

Being you need to take this stuff long term, I recommend you seek out a good allergist and get to the bottom of this.  They are the only ones qualified to really know what is going on and how to go forward in a reasonable manner without putting you in danger.  I would avoid the stuff until you can see someone.

Do you happen to know if it's lactose free?
