HELP! Swallowed a hard candy!
I hate to admit it even to myself. When I had my first ulcer, I started to chew gum. Couldn't drink for an hour pre or post meds, then 1/2 hour after meal and I would be sooooo dry. Always a piece of sugar free, usually orbit or trident so not a huge piece. Had been going with that even after my ulcer was healed, cause it kept my mouth busy.
So about 6 months into it, at a friends home we were talking and it just SLIPPED right down with a breath between words. My friend saw the look on my face and knew something was wrong--asked if I needed an ambulance or what. I was so scared that it would be stuck. I asked for some water, drank a sip. Drank a sip every 5 minutes for the next hour and waited for it to all come back up. Never did, went through fine. Not that I recommend doing that--please don't! I have heard from my surgeon about a pt that had to have an emergency endoscopy for the very same "little" piece of gum brand! But don't be overly dramatic either. Most things will work them selves out, and there are procedures like the endoscopy for times when the odds are not in your favor. (I get them often enough for my ulcers that it doesn't really seem like a huge deal, others hate the thought of an endoscopy).
Just be careful!
