PB2 during post-op liquid diet
yeah I've been BAD with my protein intake but I figure they didn't give me any in the hospital so I'm focusing on liquids first. I have been making protein pudding. Tomorrow I'm trying more of my muscle milk light since that went down easy pre-op. I'm finding the 8oz protein shake they want me to drink 3 times a day is too much, makes the pouch feel "heavy" and makes me feel ill. But tomorrow I'm forcing myself to get it all in, even if I have to take the anti-nausea meds!
It's crazy! I didn't have a pain pump (so twice I was 2+ HOURS overdue for pain meds), I didn't have a catheter, morning after surgery I started 2oz of water an hour, evening after I was on pudding and crystal light, yogurt the next morning! I also had antibiotics for the day of and the day after surgery. And I came home with my JP drain
I can have 98% fat free cream soups if I make them with skim milk and strain them before eating. But I have this diet for 4 weeks, then on to pureed for 3-4 weeks. And WHY did I have the IVC filter put in for blood clots if I'm also taking blood thinner shots?!? sheez! so many differences! but one thing's the same--we're on the loser's bench!!!

Wow......so many difference to get to the same exciting place! The LOSER's BENCH!!! Today wast he first day that I actually lost any weight, so I finally feel like I am on the bench! I gained about 7 lbs from all of the fluid in the hospital, which I expected, but then all of this week, I just slooooowly took that off. Then, all of a sudden this mornng, poof.....3.5 lbs below my surgery weight! Woohoo....let the losing begin!!
I was more nervous about it too! Looking back it was pretty easy. I had complications, that's why I really would have preferred to skip it! But, it's in now, and the Dr. says I can keep it forever if I'd like--and yes, I think I'd like! LOL
When I first got there they said they'd give me some Versid to "take the edge off" I've had it before and trust me, you WANT it! :-) Unfortunately with my asthma and sleep apnea when I laid on the table my oxygen levels dropped. (I also NEVER lay flat on my back if I can help it) So despite the added oxygen up my nose they REALLY didn't want to give me the versid because it would depress my breathing and be dangerous. So the nurse held my hand (poor guy has my fingernail marks in his hand!) and talked me through it. For ME the lidocaine shot in my neck and laying still, flat on my back, on a HARD surface was the worst, really. The lidocaine burns, not gonna lie to you! It was a funky feeling having them pushing the catheter to get it into place through my veins. I started to lose it when they placed the fluroscope over me (Like a big xray plate inches from you) and the nurse put both hands on his hips and said "you've got 5 to 7 minutes left, PLEASE don't make me give you the versid NOW!" And again held my hand as I worked through it breathing with him. They called me a tough cookie but I KNOW I'm a big old baby! LOL I felt some discomfort in my chest afterwards but the Dr. said he's never had anyone say they could feel the filter in place. (I guess I'm strange!) But, with it in I have the added peace that I'm not going to die if I can't get up an move right away on those bad days. ;-) Would I do it again? Probably because like I said I'm a big old baby and I've seen what strokes have done to my family. The Drs kept asking why I got one since I had no real history of clots! Well my uncle has TTP and my Mom has a rare form of leukemia, and we've had 4 strokes and 3 heart attacks in my family....just better safe than sorry! I was admitted after mine for surgery the next day--will you be? Or are they sending you home? I was kind of glad to be in! All I needed as the lidocaine wore off was plain old tylenol. And that was more because I could tell it was wearing off and the big baby in me did NOT want pain! LOL So hopefully I didn't scare you! Just remember 1--it's over relatively quickly 2--is a literal lifesaver if you get a clot 3--if you can have it, you WANT versid or something to take the edge off ;-) Oh and the worst?--I am apparently extremely sensitive to tegaderm dressings on my neck--I broke out with tape blisters! :-(
