Has anyone ever taken tessalon to stop coughing?

I have a terrible cough that will not go away and my ENT prescribed tessalon perles to help stop the coughing so I can get some sleep tonight.  I have been up for the past several nights and am totally exhausted.

I am going to call my surgeon tomorrow to make sure that it is ok to take them, but I thought I would check and see if anyone on OH has ever taken this med after RNY??  It is not on my list of "do not take" meds, but I still feel like I should double check.

Thanks!

I took them pre-op, turns out I'm allergic to them or something--severe stomach upset! Hoping and praying you're not like me!

The tesslon perles did not work one bit for me.  The best cough suppresant is codeine so a tylenol with codeine tablet might just do the trick for you.  The cough syrups with codeine have way too much sugar in them.  Good luck....I know how that incessant cough feels.  I was sick  2 winters ago and coughed for 2 months!

I have taken them before...not post up, but from what I know about them, they should be ok post op.  They are a liquid gel type pill though, so not sure if they are oil based.  If they are, you might not absorb them as well post op.  They only work on the "tickle" kind of cough.  If you have a phlegmy cough, they aren't that great.  They are wonderful for a tickle though!

Thanks, Lena!  I do have that tickle kind of cough and it has been driving me nuts and keeping me awake!  I did take one last night...and it was great!  I only woke up coughing once, and got lots of good sleep the rest of the night.

I appreciate the info!

Tessalon pearls (perles) are controversial, according to my doc who first prescribed them for me a few years before my RNY. Apparently they are effective for the "tickle" cough on 50% of patients. They are throat anesthetics that kinda numb the track, thus helping to calm the tickle cough reflex. They helped me but not my SigOt. Glad you're in the 50% they work for! Get better soon!

I took them preop about 10 years ago and they were a miracle drug for me. I used to get severe bronchitis and terrible coughs at the same time as my sinus infections.  The doctors didnt' know what to do to shut me up my coughs would be so bad and they would last for weeks on end.  they would give me narcotic cough medicine and they would only work a little bit. Finally they gave me the tessalon pearles and they worked. It was a miracle pill.    I highly recommend them.  Thankfully due to an IV I get to control my immune system, I no longer get these infections anymore.
