African-American Women and hair loss
My surgery was November 8th. I'm curious about what experiences African-American women have had with hair loss, thinning, shedding, breakage since having weight loss surgery. I started taking biotin this week. My hair is not doing anything weird, besides the normal shedding. I always shed, what I consider a lot of hair. That was going on before I had surgery.
Since surgery I drastically cut back on the heat I was applying to my hair, mainly because I'm super nervous about hair loss. I used to put heat on my hair everyday before surgery
.....I know....I know WTH was I thinking. Since surgery I only put heat on my hair once a week
!! I'm taking my vitamins everyday. And everyday I continue to strive to reach my protein goal......any and all advice is welcome

Hair loss is a possiblity, but not guaranteed, for every patient. Most women get shorter hair cuts to make hair more manageable, less likely to pull more hair out brushing longer hair, and making new hair growth blend in easier. Taking larger doses of Biotin can also cause hair growth on your body, not just your scalp. DAVE

I am 3 months and some weeks out. Years prior to surgery my hair started thinning at the top. As far as I and my stylist can tell, there hasn't been any excessive shedding to date. A really good friend of mine, also African American, did not experience any changes in her hair growth at all. She is approximately 6 years out and she attributes it to ingesting a significant amount of protein. I'll post If and/or when I starting noticing the changes for me. My dermatologist did say that hair loss is a possibility and that it would correct it self a few months after it begins.
I have been wearing my hair natural for about 5+ years. I usually wear it in an afro--and shampoo it once a week, sometimes twice. I only comb my hair when I shampoo it so there is always some shedding. About 2-3 months ago I noticed that my edges had thinned out and that the shedding was more than usual(I thought it was bc I had been using gel a lot). The hair loss didnt last long at all, I just took a break from the gel, conditioned my hair well and washed it twice a week. Now my hair is almost back to normal. My edges are growing back and my hair is almost as full as before. I'm getting my hair braided this wknd which i kept debating-didnt want to cause more breakage--but my hair needs a break! And its wintertime and I have a hard time finding hats to fit over my fro! lol
