African-American Women and hair loss
I'm 15 weeks out and so far, no real added hair loss. I always feel like I lose a lot of hair, but I haven't had any MORE than usual since surgery. I know I am still in the time period where it can start though. I probably should be getting in more protein, as I am kinda getting the minimum in. I also haven't taken biotin because I don't want extra hair growth other places! My surgeon said (and I had heard before) that since hair grows on a cycle, when people start losing it, it is because of damage previously done to your hair. For a lot of people, it isn't necessarily about protein or vitamins, but just the major shock and trauma our bodies go through during surgery. That is why a lot of people start losing it three months after surgery. I am still keeping my fingers crossed I don't lose much! I get my roots texturized every 10-12 weeks, and had that done again recently, and my hair handled it just fine. I will update on my blog if I start losing hair! I am hoping I don't! Good luck to you!

Hi Marvelous793,
I have been taking Biotin for years. It has helped my nails, but not with the hair loss.
While I've had thinning hair (part of the aging process) after the RNY my hair is breaking and falling out like mad. My edges in particular are very fragile. Biotin helps with re-growth.
Short term hair loss was a possibility that I was aware of. However, actually seeing my hair on the floor and in the sink is troubling. I have had blood work done, and my thyroid numbers are a bit off. So, hormones may also play a part in this. On the other hand, my nails are gorgeous.
I would not trade this hair loss for the 50 pounds that I have lost to date. I got a short cut 3 weeks ago. If I still have to wear a wig, so be it. I have no problem being a bald skinny chick. According to all my physicians the hair loss should be temporary. The weight loss is NOT.

My hair was shedding before due to PCOS symptoms. Now it's shedding even more. The hair around my temples is getting very thin. However, my hair is as long as it's ever been! Hopefully my hair will fill out in a few months. I got a relaxer about a week before the surgery. I just got another relaxer a few weeks ago. It's going to be okay. No worries! Good luck.

I had my surgery on 9/28/1o. I started losing lots of hair around Thanksgiving time. Even though I was taking in about 90grams of protein a day, it didn't matter.
I had a feeling this was going to happen. When I was on a liquid diet about 5 years ago, I lost alot of hair about 4 months after ending the diet. And it began after getting a touch up, which was the case this time around also.
I'm not taking anything to regrow my hair. I am in a wedding this May and am concerned about getting another touch up. Might textureize my hair instead.
Now, my sister didn't have any hair loss problems after her surgery.
I'm assuming my hair will grow back just like it didn't after the liquid diet.
