bread and pasta after surgery...

I have been told we can't have bread or pasta after surgery due to the fact it swells in the pouch... Have any of you had any problems with it? I'm still preop but should be having my surgery very soon and I am just curious. I don't eat it right now. I am on a diet to help me lose 45 lbs before surgery and I was just wondering if it will be a problem.

What surgery are you having?  I had RNY and I can eat bread and pasta.  However, more than a few bites of pasta feels pretty heavy in my pouch.

I'm not sure that pasta really swells in the pouch, though... I mean, if it's been boiled for at least several minutes in water, how is it going to soak up more liquid and swell more in the pouch?  Bread I can see swelling, maybe... but pasta?  How would that work?

Hi Tracy!
Is it a big deal? Nahh...not really, I just don't really eat much of it and it makes me feel over full if I eat bread and pasta. If I eat the crusty edge of bread, it is usually ok and I'm talking about a very small bite, maybe 3 nibbles worth. I have only eaten pasta a couple of times and it was just a taste, not my meal. I might eat a couple of bites of my husband's pasta but I don't make a meal of it. Basically, we eat protein first, then veggies and last, a bit of carb.

Before surgery, I couldn't even imagine doing without pasta (even though I skipped it for 2 years on Atkins). I ate pasta, bread or rice every night. Now, I really don't miss it. If I want a bite of either of them, I eat it. Mostly, I skip bread and pasta. I use low carb tortillas or those thin buns for an occasional sandwich. So, to answer the question..."is it a problem"?...not for me but it may be for you or others. Most people here go light or not at all with the pasta/bread carbs. Hope that helped.      Connie

Which surgery? I am banded and eat pasta and bread.  Kate

Highest 290, Banded - 248   Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

I still have trouble with bread and pasta after a year out. Can eat some bread but it needs to be toasted. Julie

I'm only 2 and 1/2 weeks out of gastric bypass surgery - just moving from liquids only to pureed foods and I nibbled on a small piece of a multi-grain whole wheat roll without any problems.

I'm told you should avail white flour and stick to whole wheat.

I am 5 months out from RNY. I have lost 80 pounds and eat bread and posta in very small quantities. I just started "testing" them a few weeks ago and seem tollerate them alright. They do make me feel very full and heavy in the stomach. Everyone is differnt, if you want to try them....start with a couple nibbles to begin with to make sure you are not going to dump.

I had my surgery in 2003 and can't eay either, its does swell and the pain is terrible.  I can "sometimes" have toast if its really toasty.  Rice is also bad for me.

Best of luck

Life and food preferences change post-op.  I know that's hard to imagine from where you are pre-op.  Bread was my "crack" pre-op.  I can only eat a bite or two and it has to be toasted.  I'm 14 months out.  It gets stuck and really hurts - so I rarely try.  It's for the best :).  Pasta & rice don't bother me, but I don't eat much of it.  I'm ever mindful to go for protein first.  You'll find out for yourself.  Good luck and don't worry about what you won't be able to do.  We are all different.
