bread and pasta after surgery...

I am 5 weeks out now and have not tried any of that yet and quite frankly do not want to try.  I know you made the decision to help yourself and this is one of the steps.  I see you gave up soda and that is fantastic, I don't even miss my coke zero's anymore.  Your tastes may change drastically and you might not like things you liked before.  A great example is coffee, I would drink it on occassion before, but the first 3 weeks made me terribly nauseous if I smelled it.  Then  out of the blue I had these massive coffee cravings, contacted my RN in charge of me and asked for opinions around here.  It was cleared, brewed a cup and took 2 sips, then down the sink it went.  Cured my craving LOL.  Bottom line is I would talk to the nutritionist, RN or doc about your questions on food.  If I ever have any question about something I am going to eat, the RN gets an email.  Also see about getting into a support group in your area if you have one, they are a wealth of information too!

Good luck on your surgery!

Like others have said, my opinions about food have changed.  I now want nutritious, healthy food going into my body.  I don't eat processed food and avoid white flour, white sugar, white potatoes, rice, pasta, sweets, junk food and fast food.  Just too many carbs and not much nutrition.  I'd rather have the carbs in fresh veggies & fresh fruit.

I have had a little toasted bread,  but it sets really heavy in my pouch - just doesn't feel good.

Follow the rules, protein first.  Then I have veggies and fruit, next (usually there is no next), whole grain.  I'm satisfied.  I measure my quantity of food before I start eating.

You will figure out what works for you.  We change over time.  Keep trying new things and experiment.  Protein is not an option.  At first I "choked down" protein drinks - now I really look forward to my protein drinks.  I'm sure I still have more changes to look forward to.

Best wishes.

I had RNY January 28, 2004 and still cannot eat breads or pastas.  One time no problemo, the next time big problemo, so I quit trying for the most part.

Thank you all fr your input. I greatly appreciate it. I have been on this diet for about 3 weeks and haven't had any of these things. I was just curious about after surgery. I was told it could get stuck and have to be removed by scope. I don't want to have to go through that. I was just curious if any of you could eat it or not. My biggest problem will be when the holidays roll around and there is dressing. I love it!!! but that won't be til next year so I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Thank you all again.

Um, well.....it's very stupid how the "programs" emphasize "bread" and "pasta" without so much as an explanation of these categories. Let's talk about "bread." What does that mean? Wonder crap? Anything in the mass bakery section? What's the difference between loaves of mass crap and artisan bread? How about differences between yeasty fluffy stuff and unleavened bits like tortillas? A corn torilla is the same as a slice of wonder bread and equal to half a slice of fabulous German whole grain bread..... But it's all "bread" and 99.8% of people who undergo WLS have no clue about this stuff. So, I ask, what is bread toyou?

Pasta is the same thing. Is your definition of pasta the crap in the 35 cent box of "mac and cheese"? Is it the stuff is the container of "instant" noodles? What if you were defining "pasta" as something consisting of freshly ground whole wheat? Or rice? Other grains?

What if you landed in a world that had no bread or noodles? What if you landed in a world that consisted of animal flesh (beef, fish, fowl, bison, wild animals), eggs, dairy stuff and veggies, with nothing from grains? What if you never saw another potato or grain of rice? Never another spaghetti noodle?
