Runny nose after surgery
I am post-op 3 days and since early Saturday have had a runny nose esp on my left nostril.
The thing leaks like a sieve at all hours. It's quite annoying but also I am concerned as I am probably loosing at least 1/2 cup if not more of snot an hour. It's so hard to get my fluids in as it is now I feel like my "leaky" nose is going to get me dehydrated. I am sipping water as much as possible.
It does not seem to start after any particular trigger just ups and runs when it feels.
Anyone else get this awesome side effect after surgery? Any ideas on how to help it. How silly if I had to go to the hosital for dehydration due to a runny nose, sheesh! Welcome to post-op life eh?!
Thanks for you help!

I've heard a connection between the vegus nerve and runny nose. Being only three days out, I'd call your surgeon during business hours tomorrow and get his opinion. That's best this early out!

March 9, 2011 - Coccygectomy!
I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
I had a Verticle Sleeve Gastrectomy on 19April12 and have had a constant nasal drip ever since. I've read where some Bariatric patients experience this as a sign that they've reached their food intake limit, however that doesn't seem to be my situation. My nose runs from wake-up to sleep. My Bariatric surgeon says only that he hears this all the time, but that "no one really knows why" it happens. A poor excuse, but one I feel stuck with. I check the web nearly once a week to see if anyone has any news about the cause & potential cure ... so far nothing.
I had never had a problem with a runny nose before my RNY except when I had a cold. But now my nose runs all the time. I am constantly wiping or blowing my nose. No matter where I am or what I am doing, I better have tissue with me. So you aren't alone. I guess maybe it is a possible side affect with the RNY? I would ask your surgeon if you are worried about it. Good luck to you.
