Thinking of going back to college...nervous...confused...

Wow, you've really been through it and are still kicking so there is hope for me! I have a 4 year old and a 9 year old, but like I said, they are both in school full time next year, so that would free me up a lot. It is really exciting to me to think of being challenged again. I figure it may take me a little bit to get into the swing, but hearing so many successful people going back later in life is really inspirational. Money is definitely an issue, but a local community college with an excellent nursing program is offering in county rates (I'm not in county) to anyone that wants to attend  their nursing program so I'd save a ton of money if I got accepted there.

Lots of research to do and still much more thinking, but I'm getting closer to getting my rear signed up for the fall. And you are absolutely right, education is NEVER a bad thing. Letting your brain turn to mush as you sing the wheels on the bus for the 400th time IS a bad thing! Don't get me wrong--being a stay home mom has been a huge blessing for our family, but I feel like I am being called to do more now and like you said, things work out the way and in the time that they should.

Thanks for sharing. I'll see you on the boards!

Denise

Does going back to school at age 27 as a full time working single mom of two kids receiving no child support and with a babydaddy who at the time refused to spend more than 4 hours a week with his kids count? If so, I got knowledge!

LOL! Seriously. You can do it! I nearly became a zombie in doing it but I was SO proud of myself on graduation day. I even managed to ace TWO doctoral level classes (crosslisted with undergrad classes...an incidious and evil thing to do but it was very educational).

You know where to find me if you have questions!

Graduated at 22 with my Marketing degree and started on my MBA in Fall 2006 and finished in May 2008 while working full time. A lot of sleepless nights and I still don't make the money I should but I'm a HUGE advocate of education -- it's the one thing nobody can ever take.

Be happy.

Like others *****sponded, I went back to school also. I got my BA in English last May and am currently working on my MLIS (Masters in Library and Informational Science). It has been a trial for sure. All the drama in my house since I went back to school would make a good Oprah show...or maybe Springer, lol. But I have never regretted it. The way I see it, I would regret NOT finishing even though it would have been much simpler to quit a long time ago.  Definitely do it! You can start simply, just a couple of classes until you have your confidence built up. I started with two online basic classes to get my feet wet, I would have felt overwhelmed to start out going full time.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Thanks so much for your feedback. All these success stories are very motivating! And some great advice too--start slow seems like the best piece if advice!!

Contests to you by the way! Be sure to look for me on Springer!!!! Lol!

Omgosh!! I think you have gotten some excellent responses! As someone who got their degree after 12 years of being in school, not being in school, staying home with kids, getting married, getting divorced, and so on, I can say that I am very proud of getting my college degree and I would go back to college in a HEARTBEAT!! You should do it!

But, I also wanted to share this video from You Tube, from one of my favorite musicals, Avenue Q. Appropriately, this song is called, "I wish I could go back to college!"

I respect your personal goals and I think you’d enjoy a career in healthcare, given your desire to help and nurture people. You have many options other than nursing- respiratory therapy, health information management, healthcare administration, dental hygiene etc. Make sure you apply to an accredited college and read as much as you can find about the college before applying. I’m interested in healthcare myself and currently I’ve been reading a bunch of student reviews, testimonials and California College San Diego complaints - pretty much whatever I can find about the college.
