My insurance will cover me for the RNY but not the sleeve (which is what I really want) and I was approved 6 months ago and went through my psych appt and 6mo of dieting thru my doc to get approved...and then I chickened out thinking I could do it on my own...I CANT!! I am leaning back towards doing the RNY and I have a couple doubts...I have been on here for 1 yr and I have seen 50% of people who get this surgery say they regret it...is that normal? I have seen alot of posts about people who constantly have pain or get sick...is that normal? What may cause their pain? AND...I am not nervous about the surgery...I have had 3 sea sections...I can handle that..I am just anxious about what it will feel like...PLEASE let me know if you had any issues..what was your worst?? HELP!!! IDK what to do.

I'm only three months out, but I'm glad I did it.  Like you, when I heard about the sleeve I wanted that, but my insurance wouldn't cover it either.  But, I knew I needed help.  I have not had any pain, other than surgery recovery, but have vomited a lot.  At first it was due to a stricture (which was an easy 10 min fix), and now it is when I eat to fast or eat something too dry.  I'm still learning.

This is a decision YOU have to make though, no one can do it for you.

Amber..... MOST of the people who post to this forum are the people who are HAVING problems. While I could have logged on this morning and posted (like nearly every day for three years) that I was having an awesome day, no trouble with my RNY.... I usually don't because there's no news in saying all is well. People post because they have issues. There are probably 100 people who are having an awesome day, for every one who logs in and posts about some issue.

50% Regret? I haven't ever seen that, and I've been here on this site nearly four years. If you look at those in their first 6 weeks, especially those posting here.... you might see that figure. Because they've had their body surgically altered and their life has changed..... they feel miserable because of a host of things, but this is a transitory phase for MOST people (not all). Most *****gret it in the first six weeks are LOVING life later and wouldn't trade it for the world. Other than a slight allergic reaction to the steristrips, I had NO problems at all.

Constant pain is NOT something I associate with RNY, even with the people who have had the surgery other than me. Again, there are new-op issues that are part of the learning period. Just like a baby won't learn to walk without a few tumbles, a lot of people who have this surgery won't figure out their new anatomy without a few yucky moments. It's just a learning curve. I don't know of many people who have had the surgery who are in PAIN daily, at least NOT due to the surgery. I have a chronic pain condition and it was CAUSED by weight loss (not surgery)..... but my daily pain would be the same for any surgery I had that got the weight off.

Again, my worst issue was two weeks of hives due to an allergic reaction to the steristrips. I also dump (react to sugar and sugar/fat combo..... and only 30% do)...and became lactose intolerant postop. I also have reactive hypoglycemia (which I very likely would have gotten if I just lost the weight without the RNY)

Really, you've seen 50% of people say they regret it?  I'm pretty sure that's not what I've seen.  I see most people say they are glad they did it, even if they had some complications.  Maybe you want to do a little poll and check that out.

I would have done sleeve if I could have, but my insurance would not pay for it and I am not unhappy with my RNY at all.  It is not normal to constantly get sick or have pain and most people don't have that experience.  I had some nausea when I had gallstones, and later one when I was disagnosed with gastroparesis.  My gallbladder came out and I have meds for the gastroparesis and now I feel well.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Maybe I stated that fact wrong...I should say that alot of people I read about on here that are new to having the surgery say they may regret it...I have read good things as well and its not all bad...BUT those are the things I am asking about ...the bad things that can be expected....as stated above, it may be normal for people to feel this way after getting the surgery, for a short time they may regret it,....IDK the answers thats why I am asking!!

The 50% thing - I don't think that's entirely correct. I don't vomit - I have Made myself vomit maybe 8 times over the last 3 yrs - because I had eaten something that didn't sit right or didn't chew it well enough. Honestly - I have never vomited right out of the blue. And pain - none, nada, nope, never. Not RNY related anyway. And despite having had an open emergency abdominal surgery to repair a Petersen's Hernia - and enduring around 3 weeks of progressive illness to get to the point of having that surgery - I wouldn't change a thing. Everyday when I wake up - from the first movement of the day - to the last of the day - my life is forever improved and made so worth living my my RNY. Lady Lithia is so correct - the vast majority of people who are doing fine and have no issues - are not posting here. I'm guilty of posting more lately because my husband is working away - so I have more idle time on my hands. And - I was guilty of posting more when I was sick leading up to my surgery. It was on one of these forums that I finally realized - aha! my symptoms are right in line with what these wise people are telling me - it's time to see my RNY doc. They were right. That is one of the values of the message boards - advice, comfort, reassurance, a swift kick in the butt - some one to listen, share a laugh, shed a tear. Whatever you need! I can't help you with your choice between sleeve or RNY - I didn't have to make that choice - so never considered it. Good luck!

I also had reservations because it was such a drastic decision. IT WAS THE BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't vomit unless I make myself due to not chewing something well enough or something feels stuck and won't move. I've only done it 3 times in the past year. I have had no pain or discomfort. I have only been constipated 3 times in the past year (not really abnormal for me anyway).

My life is amazing now, I'm healthy, I exercise, I am making the best food decisions I have ever made...

Good luck...

I am perfectly content being perfectly UN-perfect

Amber,

I just posted this on the Main Forum, but since I think it addresses your concerns, I'll post it here as well:

Just my thoughts...

I genuinely believe that you really have to view what  you read on OH with perspective and give consideration to context.

Though there are certainly side topics, for the most part OH is a support forum where many come for advice.

This being said, I believe that much of what is shared here is shared by those folks who are either having a difficulty of some sort, or have had difficulties, and are either looking for advice or wanting to share their experiences.  Consequently, I sometimes think that much of what is shared here can give the impression that a large number of people have problems with WLS when this is simply not the case.

Most people that have WLS do fine, and as a result, I don't think they are posting here to the extent that those looking for answers do; consequently, I sense that the reality of WLS can become skewed and, as a result, it can promote a sense of fear.

Keep in mind that if the majority of people actually had problems with WLS, most people, myself included, would opt out of having it.

I know there are many people who have had problems, and I know there are people who have actually died from WLS surgery; however, I personally have never met anyone who has had a problem, nor do I know of anyone, personally, who has died.

Every medical procedure and drug poses a potential risk to someone, and WLS is no different.  Sadly, there are those that are not going to do well, but for everyone of those, how many more are going to be saved from an almost certain untimely death as a result of obesity?

To me, it was worth the risk and I have absolutely no regrets.

Anyhow, again, just my rambling thoughts...

I just want to say I had the surgery in January and I haven't had any problems. This has been one of the best decisions in my life and I am loving every minute. I am off all my meds and I have so much energy.

I am 5 weeks out and I will be honest the first 2 1/2-3weeks i was MISERABLE and I was like WTF did I do to myself! I was regretting it but now that I am adjusting to this and my body is starting to calm down some. My pouchy can be grumpy but I see people have those day. I am loving the fact that i am losing weight and feeling great! I Had an Open RNY and my pain was horrible so the first week yeah i wouldn't of been the person to ask if you should do it. But it is up to YOU!! Good luck!
