I am a little over a month post op and I have been taking the bariatric advantage iron chewables but had to stop using them. I was getting way too constipated on those. I was wondering if anyone here uses the journey iron and if they are worth the extra money? I can't take being constipated and I have to find something to help me out. I just don't know what all I can take on a daily basis to control it. I am using benefiber right now but it doesn't seem to help much either.

Sorry but most iron do cause constipaiton. That is a side effect of them, but if you take with a stol softner you should be ok.

I can't recall, but I think I read something about the journey iron being made out of a less effective type of iron.... but I might be mistaken... I'd be cautious

Thanks for your input. I won't be using it until I know it's okay for us to use. Right now I am not taking any iron. I can't handle being bound up like that all the time and nothing will help. My iron is fine right now but I will have to get back to it soon.

I read about the journey vitamins here

And a specific quote about the iron (but this is in the multivitamin, I'm not sure if it is the same in the stand-alone iron?)"

This is only a partial quote about the type of iron used in the Journey multivitamins... again, I am not familiar with the brand beyond what I read at the aforementioned website, so I couldn't say if the stuff used in the multivitamin is the same as the stand-alone.

  1. IBG doesn’t work well with people who have disorders of the intestinal tract.
  2. Ferrous sulfate absorbs better than IBG in patients with gastrectomies.  Remember that RNY, DS, and VSG are all forms of gastrectomies.  Also, keep in mind that these surgeries create a state of achlorhydria.
  3. Ferrous sulfate does not absorb well in achlorhydriac patients.

Therefore it would be safe to assume, given these two studies, that IBG would be a poor choice of iron for RNY, DS, and VSG patients.  Additionally, it would not be good for AGB patients on any sort of H2 or PPI due to the lowered stomach acid created by taking such medication.

Carbonyl iron or heme iron will not constipate.

Journey iron is worthless.

Thanks LL. I appreciate all the trouble you went through to find these things out for me. I just wasn't about to spend that kind of money on a bottle of vitamins I couldn't use...You are greatly appreciated for finding out what I need to know. I am still new and learning.

Where would I find carbonyl or heme iron so I can pick up some soon? I gotta get back on it ASAP.

CVS sells carbonyl.

Heme is online mostly. Google Proferrin.

PM me your address and I'll send you a bottle of the Carbonyl .... I can't use it so it's just waiting for a new owner. (I did take a couple)
