Retention Sutures

Hello

I had complications and required a second surgery (open RNY).  To keep me from ripping internally again I was given 7 retention sutures.  They are in until May 15.  I have had lots of trouble with them getting infected and well just pain from where they go through the skin.  I am just wondering if anyone else has had them as many nurses have never even seen them before.  I have been put on bed rest and told to move as little as possible so that I dont further irritate them and it is so hard just laying around week after week!

Hi - I have not personally had retention sutures - but have looked after plenty of folks who have had them - I worked on a general surgery ward years ago before going to work in ER. Retention sutures are in deep and tight and the suture material is larger than used in normal suturing situations. I can imagine they are awful to deal with. But - be glad you have them there- obviously your surgeon knows you need them to heal properly. I know being on bed rest and not moving around is difficult - I have been down that road. But - short term pain for long term pain girl. You can do it. Get yourself healed up properly - it will pay off in the long run. Take something for pain if you need it - especially at night to help you get a good nights sleep. I am a big believer that a good nights sleep goes a long way in helping our bodies to heal. Take care and good luck!

Thanks, you are right they are in tight.  They have started to rub against the skin underneath and the skin under is giving way.  It is totally sick to look at,lol.  Only 2 are really painful and I can not wait to get them out.  I just am so impatient and wish they could be out now.  I had opened up after a couffing spell internally and I believe these ones go down to the abdomen wall.  I had one taken out and suprisingly it was not painful, I had worked myself up into a frenzzy about the removal.  Ah well, 2 more weeks of laying around.  I guess it never killed anyone.  I am just getting sooo board!

Thanks for the reply it helped out.  So few people even know what they are!
