Sleep Study Completed - Half Way There

I had been dreading it, but it is over now.  At 5:30 a.m. this morning I drove home after having completed my sleep study with a new diagnosis of sleep apnea, added to diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, morbid obesity, and chronic lower back pain.  I've been worried that I may have it and do not really want to sleep with a CPAP machine.  When they woke me up half way through the night and put the CPAP on, I had the hardest time going back to sleep.  The respiratory therapist said I may have to come back in and request a sleep aid, but that she thinks the two hours I had should be enough.  I'm hoping that it is.  I guess the plus side is that there is another reason for the insurance company to approve me.

I have very little left to go to complete the process and finally have my RNY.  Now that I have all my cardio and pulmonary testing done, I just have to get the clearances from the corresponding -ists, cardiologist and pulmonologist.  I also have to visit with the exercise and behavioral consultants once each and then the dietician twice.  (I finished my psycho, I mean psych, consult yesterday and was cleared.)  My last appointment is June 8 and I hope to have the surgery, pending insurance approval, shortly thereafter.  I keep trying to think what I can do to make the process move faster, but I can't think of anything.  Patience is a virtue I missed out on.

I'll be joining you all in getting healthy soon, and sending these comorbidities into remission!

Completed mine on Monday night....how do they think you can sleep normally with all the crap hooked up?!  Anyway, at least it's over and on the bright side - the surgery will hopefully make you feel much better!

I also was diagnosed with sleep apnea last august. It is surprising that you actually can sleep with a CPAP on. Mine doesn't always stay on the entire time, but every little bit helps. Looking to have major surgery, this will help you reach optimal health. Google the long term effects of sleep apnea, and that might help put this new episode in your life in perspective. Good luck to you on your journey.

Does everyone pretty much have to have the sleep study?  I'm in my 6 month pre-op diet but no one has said anything about it.  I am beginning to wonder though if I shouldn't have one since I get sooo sleepy in the afternoon at work!

RNY on 02/28/11 with
My surgeon asked  basic questions such as do you snore do you wake yourself up, stuff like that since the answers to all were no they didnt require one. I guess it all depends on your surgeon. Have you been asked any questions about how you sleep?

Yes, at my initial visit with the surgeon.  I'll ask at my next appointment though.  Thanks!

 Thanks for your replies everyone.

For my program, it is a standard requirement but from this board I can tell there are differences with other programs.

I'm just glad that they have CPAP machines that aren't loud now.  The one they had in the sleep lab was so quiet I could barely hear it...thank goodness.
