Allergic to metal? What about the staples?

My surgeon said he'd never heard of anyone being allergic to the titanium staples. I was wondering if there was anyone out there allergic to metal and did you have any problems with the staples. I just need some reassurance.

I break out with rashes if I wear jewelry too long. Even the back of the button on my jeans can give me an itchy spot.

Only 12 days til surgery, 11 if you don't count the day of. Just needed to take care of some last minute fears and worries.

Thanks all!

I too am allergic to metals, however the titanium staples they use inside of you will not cause a reaction. You are however allergic to the staples they want to use to close the incission points on your belly. DONT and I repeat DONT let them use staples there,  as they are not titanium and will cause a reaction. I just got home from my surgery and my surgeon used stitches to close the wounds. Works just as well. I asked him to write no staples on my belly to remind him not to use staples on the incissions and it worked very well. My last surgery I had, I told the surgeon not to use staples and he did any way within a couple of days I had a severe reaction which caused welts and infection so ask your doc to write it down on your chest.  Hope this helps.

Thank you so much Craig! You have no idea how glad I am that you posted. I will definitely have it written on me... I think I'll do it myself if they won't.

I am pretty sure he uses stitches regularly anyway, but I'll make sure it's mentioned and enforced.

Thanks again!!!

The inside staples will be titanium as they aren't removed, they're unlikely to cause issues. (this from a woman who is routinely told she cannot be allergic to sudafed cause it's an antihistamine---yeah, right, go ahead and try doc but have a crash cart handy!!) The outer staples are NOT titanium and you DON'T want those! I kinda had no choice, and in my case they caused less issues than the steri-strips and tape used! I'm allergic to a lot of "odd" things--we've discovered I'm actually allergic to yellow gold. but not white gold or real silver.... or my medic alert bracelet--surgical steel. One would say--well aren't the removable staples surgical steel? If they are they're not the same quality and did pose some extra itching and redness!! Good luck!

I also have an allergy to metal and my surgeon used a surgical glue on me.  Good Luck to you!

Agree to all of the above... My eyeglasses have to be either plastic or titanium or I will breakout on the temples in the summer.

No issues with the inside staples that I know of!!

Also, look up lia sophia jewelry (YES I SELL IT!!) but I have been wearing it for years and have very little to NO reaction to all that I wear. Comes with a lifetime guarantee so if you DO develop a reaction you can return it!!

Thats a lia sophia necklace in my current avatar (but no longer available).
