OT: Hemorrhoidectomy for me--what to expect???

Well friends, seems my hemorrhoids have decided they aren't going anywhere on their own. Saw the colorectal surgeon (and just my luck he was good looking--can you say "embar ASS ing!) yesterday, and when he pulled back the drape he simply said, "WOW!" Great. Not what I wanted to hear from someone who looks at butts all day. Anyway, he said no chance these are going to respond to conservative treatment and that they are thrombosed (clots) and need removed surgically. Some are internal and some are external, so rubberbanding is not an option. Nor is pushing them back in as some suggest because they continue to prolapse back out which makes them a Grade IV (of IV) severity. So Wed. next week is the day.

Anyone else lucky enough to have had this procedure? Doc said I have about a week of recovery to look forward to. Just curious what kind of pain level/reduction of daily activities you suffered with. I haven't been to the gym in over two weeks now between the illness that brought these on and then the hemorrhoids being so painful and I NEED to get there.

I know I'm in for some pain, but I'm really looking forward to the problem being fixed.

Thanks and sorry for the hiney talk near breakfast!

Denise

I have never had the surgery, but is wishing for it now. I am in so much pain. I didn't get the until I was pg with the twins. It is a daily struggle.

Good luck. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks ladies. Yeah, they hurt something fierce. Hopefully it will be short-term pain for long-term comfort!

Have a good weekend!

I had internal ones banded as well as an extensive fissure repaired.  At the time, (preop by several years) my doctor gave me a short course of Celebrex (which is 1. an NSAID and 2. I think no longer on the market) that worked awesome!  I was weak and a little tired the first few days but back to my old self within a week or so.  Stay on top of the pain with your pain meds and it won't be bad at all.

My Dad broke down and had surgery this summer, one of my best girlfriends did too.  The first week is pretty painful.  My Dad and my girlfriend took their pain meds right on schedule to stay on top.  My Dad was such a "man", he was in the bedroom and called my mom on his cell phone for her to bring him his dosage, she was in the kitchen.  Lol.  My girlfriends husband set up her blackberry alerts to tell her when to take her next pill.  She was in a fog until week two.

BUT.  Both have not had a single complaint since.  It's worth it!!!

BTW, I know your pain also and would have it done in a heartbeat if it ever got bad again.

I never had the major surgery one.  I did have the "rod" treatment in the gastrologists office.  That was bad enough, they laser the ones just inside by inserting a pencil like rod up your butt.  The rod hurts but not the laser.  Sorry I can't be more helpful but I'm sure you will feel better after your procedure.  Hell, at least the doc is cute.
