Gas-X strips?
I am scheduled for my RNY this coming Wed 5/18. Since I found this site, I have been doing quite a bit of reading and have found a lot of very helpful hints and information,
Having previously undergone a couple laproscopic procedures, I understand how important movement can be in helping to release the gas and I plan on doing my best to walk as much as possible. My question is about using Gas-X strips, Based on my Dr's nutritional instructions, I have been very diligent in reading labels to ensure 3 gms of sugar or less per serving. Hopefully this is not a dumb question, but since I did not see an ingredient chart on the box, does any one know if I should be concerned about the strips containing sugar?

I have not had surgery yet, but in preparation, I went to the store yesterday to get some of the recommended items so that I have them on hand. When I went to look for Simethicone, I only found the infant drops and asked the pharmacist if there was an "adult version" of it. They just recommended the Gas-X. They have Gas-X pills, chewables and the strips and figuring I will have a hard enough time swallowing things post-op, I opted for the strips.
In looking at the box that I have, the strips do have sorbitol, which is sugar alcohol that is naturally found in fruits and used as a sugar substitute. In researching these ingredients just now, it says that sorbitol can be used as a mild laxative and may cause GI distress. I am sure the low amount in the Gas-X strips will not do so, but something to keep in mind as a possibility.
The strips also have sucralose, which is the common artificial sweetener in Splenda, so other than natural sugars, looks like the sugar content is low.

Thanks guys - I will take them with me. I think I am just a little antsy - excited and anxious all at the same time. My Doc and his staff thoroughly explained why I want to avoid dumping. The physical reaction while bad in itself, is not my concern really. I don't want to find out that I am in that percentile that doesn't have a reaction. I know for this tool to work for me, I have to be willing to follow the guidelines. This is a major decision for me (as it is with each of us) - my resolve is to accept the changes I will need to make while I enjoy the wnderous results I know will come.
